Homebrew lager will never turn out anything like a pint of pub bought lager, because the processes used in making a commercial larger can't be replicated at home, unlike brewing ales. None of the kits that say Lager on them will turn out anything like what you know lager as, they turn out more like a cheap IPA.

However, if your feeling adventurous you could jump straight in and go for one of these http://www.brewuk.co.uk/store/beerkits/brewextract... it's a little more involved but the end product is streets ahead, and you really feel like you've brewed beer, rather than add water to a can.
Whatever you do, make sure to the extent of obsession that everything that touches your beer is clean and sanitized with something like Milton fluid.

So far I've tried the Cerveza, Australian Pale Ale,Candian Blonde and the Real ale and all are very good. I tried a couple of the cider kits, the normal apple one made me feel very ill and the Spiced cider was ok.
I've got the one brewing container and about 120 bottles so i just keep one thing brewing all the time while having the last brew or two sitting outside settling. I try to keep some back for christmas but usually end up drinking most of it
Taking into account the the kit with the tub, hydrometer, bottles etc is about £60 it soon starts paying for it's self. You'll get about 40ish bottles out of one brew and by the time you buy the malt, brew enhancher/sugar and carb tablets it'll cost £20. Works out at 50p a 500ml bottle.
In my opinion, it takes so much nicer that the usual maintstream beer you buy at the supermarket, and you don't feel hungover shoudl you drink too much, which you will
