Working away last night we were passed by a Police liveried locomotive on a low-loader. It was the old style livery of white with an orange stripe. What was this for? Presumably not Detective Slipper's personal transport? hehe

Awesome. Never seen that before, a little before my time biggrin

However that isn't the train we spotted, it had a flat front.

This is it from Google Images:

One of 5 repainted class 47/8s by Virgin around the early 2000s into heritage liveries to mark of the end of loco haulage on the crosscountry route.

This was chosen as the as a 37 was used in the 80s for an advertising campaign for speeding trains however this one IIRC was used for a BTP campaign.

Was stored at the former airbase at Long Marston possibly going for scrap now.

Good old PistonHeads, always delivers, and I have now seen that Intercity advert smile Googling suggested it may have been part of campaign aimed at preventing vandalism on the railways.

Shame if it has gone for scrap.

There are that quite a few in active preservation and even more slowly rusting providing spares for the active ones or waiting to be restored that these are broken for spares. BR made 512 of these around 50 years ago.

Yes I read somewhere that the railway constabulary used it to cruise the tracks in search of trespassers and rock-chucking kids. They then descended on the perps from a great height - or something like that.
Wonder if they changed the horns for the hee-haw type? wink

I remember that class 37 loco parked up in the train depot in Gateshead way back in the days when the advert was being broadcast.
It was filmed on the Newcastle - Carlisle line.
IIRC one of the model train manufacturers brought out a limited edition model of it.

It was on it's way up to Booth's Scrapyard in Rotherham and then on to the great depot in the sky.
