The time has come to fit sturdier tyres on to the winter bike, currently running Open Pro Corsa and love the suppleness that the the 320 tpi thread count gives.

Would be interested to hear if the Pave's are as 'pro' as reviews suggest or would I be just as well off with Gatorskins for example?

Riding will be 30-40miles at weekend with as much as possible 10 mile each way commute during the week on country roads.

Something which is relatively slip resistant as the temps drop would be nice.

They're the bks: tough, fast rolling and grip. F. expensive to use as a commuting tyre, mind, as they don't last that long. Will be throwing a set on my bike as soon as funds permit.

From now until March I'd say I'll do around 1-2000 miles so happy enough with the cost for one season of grippy riding.

Interested to hear if there are alternatives as most comments I've seen would suggest they are almost uniquely good.

Conti GP4 Seasons are often touted as their main rivals (and the Veloflex Pave, but that's an out-and-out classics race tyre so forget it!). Heard good things about both TBH. Another plus for the Contis is the ability to buy them in 28mm width: the Open Paves are 24mm only.

Veloflex Arenburg and Roubaix are tubs only so not applicable. The Vittoria Open Pave are the best you are going to get from a clincher in that respect asides from Conti GP4000s which are good all year round too

I ran 4000s earlier in the year and I personally wouldn't fancy them for through winter use, fine for a zippy summer tyre but a bit on the flimsy side for winter....IMO

Zingy fast though biggrin

Vittoria are supposed to be updating their 'classic' tyres with the new ones out this month. The current 24mm Pave (I think) is supposed to be changing to all black and getting a new name, there is a new 25mm Pave coming out and an open version of the 27mm Pave, both with the green stripe. Compounds may be tweaked too. I may have some of the details wrong. But maybe worth looking into in case there is a better tyre to suit your needs or discounts on the old ones coming along any day now.

I'm still on my open Paves and they're past it...v. slippy in the wet once past their peak. Holding out to see how the new lineup shakes out before replacing.

Ohhh, that is interesting. Open Paves in 27mm trim would be akin to a magic carpet cloud9 And idea for my planned trip to Belgium for the Tour of Flanders biggrin

Just checked the Vittoria site and they have 27mm Open Paves listed in their 2013 catalogue.
