Recommend me some bars...

I'm in the market for some new handlebars, so I'd be interested to see what the PH biking massive want to spend my money on.

I bought an Ellsworth Truth last month, and the ape who owned it before me cut the cheapo alloy riser bars down so small there isn't room for to get the levers into a one-finger only position without hitting the bends.

So, spec is thus:

I'm an XC, Enduro, fast trail, some jumps, no DH or ten foot up in the sky stuff type of rider.

I'm after something about 700mm, light, proven, strong. Money not an object. I'm not skimping on an Ellsworth. I'd rather save for the right kit.

What do I buy?

Thomson have just started doing bars... that'd be where my money would go (along with a stem / steat post / clamp to boot)

Thompson stuff is lovely. Didnt know they were doing bars. All my bars are Easton, from Carbon CNT ones to EA70's all nice kit.

Oooh. Thompson. Good call. I'll look into that. Stem is OK for now and I've got a USE Ti seatpost that's not going anywhere, but I do have a smattering of T-stuff on other bikes...

Easton Easy. Haven or Havoc, or maybe even the new 35mm versions and matching stem.


Alternative is not the availability of the holy trinity oh Thomson post, Thomson Stem, Thomson bars, Caveat being I've not tried the bars yet to comment on their shape - hopefully their lovely as you would expect.

Renthal Fatbar. Got them on my XC bike an you can hang off them all day without any fuss. Plus they are an awesome matt gold bronze colour too.

Gone for the EA70s. Right combo of strength, weight, size and reputation. Was seriously tempted by the Thomson bars though - they looked seriously nice, but I couldn't lay hands on any to see how they felt.

Noooo - If it's not too late, go wider! Even if it takes a few rides to gel with the new generation of super wide bars.. they're amazing! 780mm for me:

I'm running EA70 monkey bars on my single speed, certainly helps with getting a 29er to turn.

There was a guy on STW selling a lightly used set of Havens yesterday for £75ish. If I had some spare this month would have gone there, no question!

Give KCNC a look. Their kit is made of scandium and is simply beautiful. OK so they're based in HK, which puts off a lot of brand snobs, but they are easily a match for the likes of hope / chris king in terms of quality.

I have their bars and stems and QRs on my road bike, tandem MTB, winter xc bike and 5 spot. Never had a problem with any of their kit. They are very very strong but have the same weight as XC bars.

Puft... 780mm thats nothing You want a Super star yard stick 950mm!!!! lol In all seriousness Superstar bit's a top notch. I have just bought a Rethnal fat bar wil be trying it for the first time tomorrow.
