Nikon cashback offer starts today - at the risk of sounding thick, why do they not just discount the price at point of sale? Surely there is a cost to Nikon to administer the cashback through a Visa prepaid card? Or do they rely on a percentage of buyers not claiming the cashback?

These promotions rely on people not following the rules e.g. applying after the time limit or not sending a receipt etc. so the risk is less than discounting every product at point of sale.

Also they get your name and contact details on the application form so they gather marketing intelligence also.

There would be a cost to coordinating a point of sale discount across multiple retailers also so the simple case of each customer sends back a form and is sent a card might even be easier.

What are they providing cash-back for, and how much?

Bought a Lumix GX1 last week fro JL with a £50 cashback offer from Panasonic.

I was dubious and have never received cashback before.

It was simple, go to website, fill in from, attach photo of receipt and £50 was paid into my paypal account the next day.

Genuinely felt like £50 off the price of the camera as it was so simple and quick.

Yes and Nikon unfortunately put the money on a cash card so the harvest spend information...

These visa prepaid cards are a bit of a scam, after 6 months you get charged a £2 per month maintenance fee. I believe that the only way not to get charged is to spend all of the prepaid money within the 6 months. That can be difficult because even if you have a 1p in credit you will be charged.

Surely though all they do is take the 1p thats remaining? They can't add £2 to the balance as its not a credit card can they?

It appears they can, so to be on the safe side make sure your account is zero within the first 6 months.

Confirmation email from Nikon about the admin charge:

"Thank you for your email. Yes the Visa Debit card will deduct a monthly administration fee if you have not used it before 6 months".
