What next? Will they rename bacon butties as 'hot pig' so people arn't confused by the difference between bacon and ham in their 'cold pig' sandwich?

What about their muffins? I hope they clearly label if they are 'British sliced and toasted muffins' or 'Foreign muffins full of sweets*'?

I'm not expecting Debenhams to tell me what beans they use, or offer a machiato or some other weird and wonderful concoction that you normally find at a small Italian specialist, but I think latte and cappucino are standard enough terms now that there are coffee shops on every high street.

It makes Debenhams look quite out of touch, IMHO. It feels like a real step back, as though their next step will just be offering coffee in black or white.

  • Suitably described to suit a Daily Mail article smile

You realise your own inverted snobbery about 'fancy' things is far more pronounced than somebody who enjoys decent coffee or food choosing an espresso over 'coffee'?]

What on earth is the problem with people liking to eat and drink food that's slightly more refined than "meat + veg" or "coffee"? We're not in a Warburtons advert FFS?

Incidentally, are you poor and from Manchester during the War as you sound like my granny?

Odd post.

Inverted snobbery is as bad.
Who doesn't know what an espresso is? WTF - how is 'a shot of strong coffee' simpler?

ETA. Oops - or what he said ^^ hehe

You'd have to be pretty insular and ignorant to find ordering a coffee challenging. Not that I care either way but it's not complicated is it?

I don't disagree about the barista label, but tbh this looks like Debenhams are acknowledging that their stores are full of people too thick to work out what a cappuccino is hehe

Cheap PR stunt that makes them look out of touch. I went for a coffee in one the other day and it was pretty average and the place was pretty average.

Calm down! Not a personal attack at all - I just know from previous posts that you get irritated by what you perceive to be food snobbery and like others, have suggested that you are just the other side of the same coin. Not even an 'attack' as such, really, is it?

If you mean the bit about my granny, it was intended to be humorous as I can't believe anyone would be so crass as to genuinely ask that question and mean it.

Given you then go on to say you like a stovetop Moka pot (I do as well, btw), I completely fail to understand your position. You like nice coffee and yet you also don't??

(I don't know anything about pissing on a blanket, btw)

I appreciate what Debenhams are trying to do here, but they're rather stuck.

Do they want to attract people who are modern younger people who have grown up with this for the last 10-15 years, or older people who don't understand this stuff and want it in plain english?

The latter option smacks of turning it into the modern day Littlewoods cafe...

I just remember we'd discussed it before smile

If you ordered a latte, you would indeed get milk but a caffe latte would be fine. Only before 10.30 am though. Espresso for during the day/evening.

Is that the law then?

I agree that "Tall, venti and grande" are a load of bks, but buying a cup of coffee isn't rocket science is it? Espresso, cappuccino, latte, what's the problem? confused

All they're doing is showing empathy for their target market which I assume is 50+, many of whom are not aware of what a latte or and espresso is. But at the same time they are being very patronising.

Exactly this happened to me. Turns out the non English speaking waiter had tried to tell me but I just kept saying latte at him, until my cup of hot frothy milk turned up. In 35 degrees. In bike leathers. Weird looks came my way. I decided I needed to get some water too so went to the shop, stood there looking at the two bottles for ages before finally thinking "this one probably isn't fizzy", walking outside and hearing the dreaded hiss as I opened it. A bad day for drinks, to be honest.

biggrin not far off myself now!

Truth is until a year ago I was not a coffee drinker and I would have struggled to define each of the popular coffees. The reality is that 99% of people seem to think an Americano comes with milk and get very confused between a machiato and a mocha.

We actually have people walk out when they find out we don't serve lattes in a glass rolleyes
