i think I saw a thread here before on this, and am not sure if it related to 4.0 only or also the 3,8,
I noticed a 4.0 at the dealer with a cratered engine. 8,000 miles or so and it cannot even be turned over manually. Just a solid lump. Does anyone have any updated info??

Allegedly it is an issue on the 4.0ltr engine not the 3.8ltr GT3s or RSs. Apparently there have been quite a few 4.0ltr engines let-go and it appears to be well known about in the circles that would know.

I don't know if this a geunuine engine problem/weakness or whether people missed downshifts/over-revved, but it would be good to know. I've heard some comment that the GT1 block was finally taken too far with the 4.0ltr swan-song, but I understand (and perhaps Fioran or Steve will be along in a minute to confirm) that the 4.0ltr has been used in some of the race series so scuttlebut perhaps doesn't add-up?

Only recall ive had done is the caulking plug resealed onto the engine as there is a possibility it may come out, thus engine oil being lost

Isn't the 4.0 just a stroke change? So why would the block integrity be affected?

Porsche know of no recall for the 3.8, I keep checking. Surly if there was an issue we would know...

It was me that started the other thread and I was poo-poo'd (should be expected on PH I guess)... but a recall is coming. 100% watch this space.

I'm not going into details here, but its likely that all 3.8 Gen2 GT3's and 4.0's are affected. As always, the Porsche UK network will be the last ones to know most likely....

Let's just say that there are currently a few owners with new engines strapped onto crates coming out of the factory......

Spoke to my local OPC about this today - they said that they had had no RS engine failures or knew of any.

However there are RSs with oil leaks between engine and gearbox!

I know of two 4.0 RS recently for sale in Europe with warranty engine replacements.
I was unable to find out why they failed unfortunately.

What??????? Strapped to a crate for making a warranty claim? That's against the Geneva Convention surely?

If there were only 600 4.0s made, then it doesn't take a lot of failures to be significant(especially on a car whose raison d'etre was the engine)

It's not a fault with the engine. Engine is perfect. It is a 3rd party component that fails, which in turn causes massive engine damage....

The oil leak issue has been around for years and isn't related.

And... said component is shared between std Gen2 GT3 3.8, GT3RS 3.8 and GT3RS 4.0.....

Exactly what I am thinking. Just from the ones we've heard about on here that makes is a gigantic failure rate in my book. A 1% failure rate on all the ford focsues ever built must come to soemthing like 80,000 cars ! I'd be sticking mine on the ramps will Porshce sorted it.

Would this component by any chance be an oil pressure switch?

The reason I ask, is that when my car was having new tyres fitted at my OPC in July this year, a new one was fitted as a result of a 'workshop campaign'. When I enquired what the issue with the switch was, I was told that the oil pressure light had come on for no apparent reason on a number of cars?????

Just wondering......

Strange - mine had its first birthday health check, and another one today as it was in getting the splitter refitted, but no mention of an oil pressure switch. And we go to the same OPC!
