If you've ever had to cross the Thames East of Tower Bridge you'll know there is a distinct lack of crossings. There is a consultation open where the public can give their views on a new crossing - I like the idea of a new tunnel to run alongside the Blackwall tunnel.

Please show your support!

Overview

New tunnel

New Ferry

Survey

Mods: I think deserves to stay in GG as opposed to London - many people cross the Thames that don't live in London.

No because of this.

Because the Silvertown Tunnel and the Blackwall Tunnel are located so close to one another and share common approach roads, if the Silvertown Tunnel is built and subject to tolling, the Blackwall Tunnel would also need to be tolled – otherwise there would be serious delays at the Blackwall Tunnel as so much traffic would wish to use it. Although it is also relatively close, the Rotherhithe Tunnel serves a different set of destinations and would be unlikely to be affected significantly by traffic changes as a result of these crossings, and there are no plans to introduce a toll to use it.

Looks like this is where the funding is going to come from...

Just drive a bit up the road and use Tower Bridge, if they're going to charge for Blackwall now.

I don't see why Blackwall would need to be tolled (other than to raise money) - it's the only real viable route for most people now so can't see how it would get worse. I imagine there's enough wealthy city types commuting in from the SE to Canary Wharf that would pay for the Silvertown crossing if it took 15+ minutes off their journey.

I wouldn't mind paying a toll if it meant we'd have another tunnel.

I used to use the Woolwich ferry back in 1997-1999. It was very good and relatively quick when the other routes had issues... how about another car ferry? wink

A better start would be making the woolwich ferry actually work properly...as opposed to running a one boat service most of the time....

Here's a thought; use the monies raised from the tolls on the Dartford crossing to foot the bill, after all, that crossing has already been paid for by us motorists.

Replace Woolwich ferry with a tunnel/bridge? Waiting for the Ferry always cause such big delays
