I'm not a wealthy man, I'm an average Joe in many ways, except I am slightly taller than average at 6'3... hardly basketball player size though.

I've had 924's, a 928 and some 944s and despite the low roof lines, the low seats have always meant I've had enough head and leg room.

Not being wealthy means I'll never get a 918, or a GT1, a CGT, not even a GT3 frown But, I have felt that it's time to step up from the older water cooled cars, it's Boxster time for me, and then one day into a Cayman.

So, started to look at some Boxster 3.2s on ebay, went to see one today for the first time to really look around them, get to know them and sit in them.... and sodding hell I dont fit frown

Well, I do, but it's just not spacious, my knees are up by the stalks and I didnt feel I could safely use the pedals while steering.

I'm gutted. I feel as if I have no place to go now in the Porsche world. I appreciate the 911 but I dont want one, and any that I could afford would be old and the running costs would be too high.

So ... I feel lost, gutted, sick as a footballing parrot.
I guess I could buy a 944 turbo or a 968, but I wanted something different.

Damn it.

There are ways around, I'm taller than you by a few inches and fit fine in a Boxster with a bit of tinkering.

Brey Krause do a lowered seat rail which will give you a few inches extra space.

Changing the standard seats will give you even more space.

Likewise removing the Porsche bus wheel will give your legs more room.

Moving the centre consul (the cd holder bit) will also provide you with extra knee room.

I was the same with BMW Z3 MCoupes, always wanted one, but no chance of ever ftitting behind the wheel.
Even a 996 isn't the most comfortable car I've ever sat in but you do get used to it after a while and I've actually found myself moving the seat forward a bit.

Try driving one, you might be pleasantly surprised.

986 and 996 running costs are very similar....they use a lot of the same parts. Yes the 996 will be older than the 986 for the same budget but the running costs won't be much different.

Was this a facelifted or 987 Boxster? The early cars are appalling for leg/head room for us tallies, I'm 6ft 5. The later cars have a lot more room so worth checking.

I can see your point, but being on an average wage, running one of these cars will take up more of my cash than I'd ideally like to be spending.

It'd be worth it for a car I really want, but not on a car that I've bought because 'it'll do'

Oh well, I'll pimp my 944 a bit for now and think about doing the seat mods to a Cayman some day when their price is down some more.

I had this with an s2000. I had an accord and went to look at the s2k with the intention of buying that day if it was a good example. I didn't even fire up the engine as I couldn't get a comfortable position it was so cramped.

I would find I could fit in the Boxster but it was a compromise, I had to move the seat forward so I could get the backrest back, this meant my legs were bent, it was ok but I found after 2 hrs I would get a sore back from it. Being mid engined there is not a lot of backward seat travel for tall people.

I'm surprised to hear you're struggling, I'm a healthy 6'2", all legs and I have no trouble fitting in my Cayman.

Don't give up yet, try all the seat positions, you'll get something comfortable I'm sure. smile

There is a difference between the 986 and 987, also better adjustment, so that might explain why your Cayman is ok for you.

I had an ex girlfirend with a 986 and it was a great ride (986 not the gf, she was rubbish. Sorry couldnt resist)

Anyway, I'm 6'4" and I loved the way the 986 drove but the seating position was a little uncomfortable. To make it worst because of my height I felt like I was sticking out of the car too much which meant in traffic/town I would feel compelled to squat a little as well :-)

987's have quite a bit more room. Suggest you save a little longer as it looks like you can get a good one for around 11K

I'm just over 6ft 2" and I didn't fit in a 986 - but the 987 fitted me like a glove! smile

I think the main difference with the 9x7 is the wheel can adjust up and down as well as in and out. My friend is 6ft 7 and he couldn't drive my 986. I never let him try my 997.

I'm a touch over 6'4 and all legs.

I got rid of my 987 Cayman as it was took awkard to drive due to lack of leg room. Quite depressing really!! I'm itching to see how the 981 chassis compares.

There is something to be take away from these sort of threads by the people who complain when a new car model is bigger than the previous one. Maybe it is being done to match the audience who are all slowly getting taller as we evolve (flat earth/creationists cover your ears)and need bigger cars to match. Not many people will NOT buy a car as the seat went further back than they needed. Many people WILL not but a car as the seat doesn't go as far back as they need.

6' 4" and long legged - I'm 'ok' in the Spyder, but not great.

No such issues in a 996.
