Tesco Cafe Goes Costa Coffee

This has happened in a few Tescos I know, so assume it's a national strategy. A big mistake imho. My local Tesco cafe used to be heaving all thru breakfast. I used to pop in occasionally. Get a decent fry up for about £3. Now there's one man and his dog in there, paying £8 for some fancy coffee and a poxy panini.

Also, was talking to a family I know, they all used to go shopping in Tesco at the w/end, and then had lunch there. Kids too young to be left at home. Now the cafe is Costa Coffee, they've moved their weekly shop to Asda, just so they can have a reasonable priced lunch and get something the kid'll eat, like chicken nuggets or whatever.

Think this will end up costing Tesco millions...I hope so. Serves 'em right, the greedy swines.

I doubt it will cost them a penny, they probably rent the space to Costa regardless of takings. Possibly even have profit clauses should Costa make a mint Tesco get bonuses.

Aside from the fact that I take great glee Tesco have cocked up their market strategy wrt to that store, the bit above makes me pretty sad.

The Costa at my local Tesco is always heaving. Before that, the cafe was almost always dead (the exception being weekend mornings).

Costa also sell food, and they're not that expensive.

How will that work if people change supermarkets? How will Tesco quantify that.

Yes, the sell paninis and all that jazz. They don't do burger and chips, or a jacket spud, for families.

They may not be expensive compated to Starbucks of whatever, but it's treble the price of a supermarket cafe.

I used to get scrambled egg on toast with mushrooms and a cup of tea for £2.88!

This may sound mental, but why not go home and cook the food you've just bought? It'll be cheaper than the cafe ever was.

Because you can't buy 2 eggs, 2 slices of bread, 1 teabag and half a dozen tinned mushrooms!

And that's even more sad. Children's diets in this country are appalling if that's acceptable and parents let them get away with it.

i saw the local T had chaged its cafe, but tbh i'm spoilt, have m&s next door so if i fancy a coffee i go there

Will it? Or will it help them to appeal to shoppers with more disposable income, who aren't there looking for a £1.48 full English, and instead can afford to spend more in their stores?

Given the choice of those two consumer groups, I know who I'd be trying to entice.

Only a matter of time before this sort of instore or "in-attraction" outlet becomes the norm. Costa plan to open over 1300 additional outlets in under 3 years. Granted many will be abroad (China etc) but more Costas in garages, tescos et al can be expected.

Costa have a very aggressive expansion programme. Be interesting if that is tempered by recent events in Totnes.

I quite like it now that our local Tesco has one.

The coffee is now palette-able and its no longer full of ASBO's with kids!

Different set of circumstances though by opening a franchise in a Tesco store - I can't see either customer complaining as they appear to be after convenience above all else.

There's the third consumer group, which includes me. People who could comfortabley afford to live their whole lives in poncy coffee shops but refuse to do so because they're full of shallow wannabees who seem to enjoy paying well over the odds for jazzed up tat.

Give me the cheap fry up with the proles any day.

This, and of course when Costa see the footfall through Asda's Cafe they will try and rent space there too.
