Which camera- xmas present?

The rents have hinted at getting me a camera for xmas ("If I were to do something silly like get you a camera for Christmas, which camera would I buy"....subtle as a sledgehammer, is my ma bless 'er)
I have decided on a digital SLR. Preferably one which could record video as well- although not essential.
To be honest i'm a bit overwhelmed by the choice.
Basically, I would like something which would take ace pictures (after I take the time to learn how to use the thing!). The BiL has a Nikon D90 which I had a play with this weekend and that seems pretty good, although I only used it on Sport and Auto settings. Not sure if it does video though?
So any recommendations for a newbie?

^ as Rob said the topic is done with great regularity, have look round.
Basically, over 95% of people will recommend either Canon or Nikon.
An idea of what they are willing to spend will enable you to see where in the range(s) you can go, head down to a store that sells them and handle all the ones in that range, one makers bodies will sit better in your hand, get that one.
The only real choice is whether you spunk all the budget on the best body you can along with a kit lens or perhaps go a gen or two older and get better glass from the outset. An indication of what you are likely to shoot will help people recommend which of those is a better option.
Fwiw I got a D90 late 2010 as my first DSLR and it has been a great body for me, I choose it over a 500D (Canon) as it sat better in my hand.
Was tempted by the D7000 when that was released but I decided to invest in lens and learn the craft more instead as I still wasn't anywhere near utilising the potential of the D90.
As and when Nikon get the D400 out I can see that being my next 'investment'.

The short version...
Normal recommendations are for the Canon / Nikon DSLR of your choice - iirc all of the current cameras will also shoot video (BiL's D90 does video too)
As you have a BiL with a Nikon camera then it maybe an idea to go with Nikon as well as you can borrow / swap lenses and accessories
