Am I the first to crash in the snow this year?
Discussion
So, last weekend I bought an AWD X-type so i could get around in the snow..
I took her out last last night in the fresh snow and soon realised that i had very little grip on the corners when I ploughed off the road on the first corner and went straight into the rough stuff at 15mph..
No damage done, and being AWD I got her back onto the road.
Half a mile down the road the same thing happened, but this time there was a dry stone wall protecting me from driving into a 'burn'...
I had nothing..no braking, no steering. I had a slow motion crash off the road and straight into the wall
Anyone got a bumper for an X-type?
I now realise you need more than AWD, you need to have decent tyres and a bit of a f
king clue about driving in the snow in the sticks.
What an idiot.
I was driving like miss daisy, but i think i should have been using the power instead of using the brakes..lesson learned.
Gutted.

Golden rule often mis understood
AWD does not give any more grip in snow or any other condition it gives more traction
Grip comes from tyre and surface
What tyres?
Not crap brick hard korean ones by any chance?
Guess you will be considering snow tyres?

A tyre is a tyre, whether it be driven or not. Grip is the same but TRACTION is improved. People forget this!
Not the tyres, but the nut behind the wheel- light touch on brakes/throttle/steering all help, plus anticipation. And don't forget ,that getting out of a skid on AWD is more difficult than with FWD/rwd.Four wheel drive will often get you moving in snow that would stop two wheel drive with the same tyres on it. However it won't help you stop!
This is discovered by a surprisingly large amount of people everytime it snows.
I saw this the day after the snow. Looks like a slightly optimistic entry speed!

Well it seems snow isn't the issue, wet roads are
mX5 has been crashed into, most likely a write off. Yay

Was she parked up?
I have screwed my license plate back on to the badly cracked bumper, i have bent the cross member too but i guess it will just stay bent...
Someone is selling the bumper i need on ebay, in the correct colour, delivered for £120. Could be worse

Guys its not the snow that catches people out this time of year its the cold. This week my winters went on as the temps are averaging 7D or less up here. That's the temp summer rubber starts to go hard and looses grip. Add in rain and hey guess what your car isn't stopping as good as it used to. Regular as clockwork since the temp dropped my local A19 commute to work has has an accident nearly every day.

You really don't have much luck with that car do you Rod? The name of the other guy tickled me though

Off topic but how did you like your mx? Thinking about a mk2 one myself
