The auxiliary cooling fan on my wifes' Paul Smith (multi-point injection) has started cutting in at too low a temperature. Does anyone know where the temperature sensor for the fan is located? There are no sensors on the radiator itself, and the one located below the thermostat housing does not appear to be it (temp gauge?) There is a sensor located in the block front which I haven't seen on older Minis. Could this be it?

my mpi fan cuts in at low temp aswell the only temp sensor i know about it the one in the thermostat housing not that it matters with my fan ne more as i hit a deer last nite and the fronts pretty wrecked

This cutting-in at too low a temp is not uncommon.
On competition cars the auxiliary fan is normally turned into a manually operated unit with a switch somewhere in easy reach of the driver. The wiring mod is simplicity itself:
Just take a lead, using decent wire, from the non-fused side of the junction box, go to an in-line 20amp fuse, then to a switch, preferably illuminated type, then to the fan +ve connection, then another lead to earth from the fan motor (it should already have this lead). Just switch it on when the gauge starts to climb a bit or when you hit heavy traffic or the outside air temp is high.

yer fatboy me and my gf are ok we were doin 35mph in a 40 and it just ran out infront of me i didnt see it till it was 2 late the front panal i have beeten bck out aswell as the wing they need replacing but just for now i knocked the dents out also grills bent in spotlamps smashed bumpers bent up tiebar is bent and now replaced with 1 from rover for £30 the main idea for rover part was so if it didnt fit i knew something else was bent but it went in nicely so now just saving up for new parts poor lil mini

Did you break the spotlights? I've got a couple of spare standard spots which came off my 1990 car. they are not powerful enough for rallying, so I'll sell them for a few quid. Let me know if you need them.
Got 2 big Cibie Super Oscars for the Enduro car.

SO ANY WAY BACK TO THE QUESTION ....

MY PERISHIN NEWFANGLED ROVER COOPER S HAS FAILED MOT ...

BOILED OVER WHILE WAITING TO BE TESTED FOR EMMISIONS (AND THUS WASNT TESTED!)

Not happy ... found the fan fuse (15a had blown) changed it and fan cuts in sorted...
fuse blows again ... put a 20 in popped that soon after - no fan at all now!

Going to try and get a haynes manual tmrw ... but ...

where is the temp sensor for fan - guage seems accurate enough - is the fan controlled direct from ECU
ie 1 sensor or is there another?

I either have therefore dodgy wires, dodgy sensor or dodgy ECU?? any ideas and or clues?
If I wire a manual switch will I risk damage to the ECU?

hi , all multipoints suffer from this , Rover brought a modification out to cure it - you need a new sensor (brown) one the thermastat housing and an extended piece of loom to connect it NB this has to be soldered on the connections .
part no for loom is YMQ105690 , cant remember switch no.

GTR313 is the sensor

usual path of problems is -

wires fray, so fan either never runs, or runs flat out, fan then burns out, engine boils.

a very, very common problem.

rads are also on back order at the mo'

curses!

update - seized fan - rotates very lumpy and thus pops fuse!

new one ordered from dealer ...!
