Value of a 20D?

This is not an advert!

I am looking to change up to a 5DMkIII and so my partner in crime, a 20D, will no longer be needed.

It had a new shutter actuator by Fixation and has the grip and two batteries. Also the remote control unit to control long exposures etc.

I've had a few years use out of it and it still takes excellent photos (I took some tripod mounted ones of my LS430 the other night before it was sold).

My question is: what is something like this worth?

If you asked me the rough value of a W140 S500 from 1997 I could tell you but this - no idea!

Would it be better to split it up into camera, grip and remote control to maximise return?

Any advice gratefully accepted.

I keep meaning to flog mine - also with grip etc (upgraded to 7D 3 years ago) and if I had sold it at the time, a few hundred would have been handy. It's still sitting here. I'd guess, unless you're desperate for the cash, the camera is worth keeping as a second body/backup but you could sell the grip and control for a few quid probably quite easily. The 20Ds bodies on ebay have been going for around 70-100

I would say yes, it also widens your market as some people will want the grip but already have the camera etc.

Agreed.

Unless you're buying from somewhere that does secondhand, in which case they may do you a trade-in deal.

Another vote for keeping the 20D if you're not desperate for the money, I still use mine, especially for shooting motorsports, where the crop factor (vs my 5D) makes for better images. Or you could pick up a cheap lens and remote and use if as a timelapse camera.

My understanding is that the remote is the same on the 20D and newer cameras.

I'd keep it as a backup.

I keep thinking I'll get rid of my 1Ds2 as I very rarely use it now I've got a 5D3 but it has dual slots and makes a great backup camera for events, weddings etc.

There is nothing wrong with it per se and, for someone starting out, would be an ideal entry to SLR land (in particular given that these were the top prosumer cameras back in the day if I recall).

With the (pittance) that I would likely get, may be a good idea simply to hold onto it. Also means that no need to try and sell my Sigma UWA lens which would not work with the MkIII

I am guessing that I would find the MkIII a spectacular leap in advancement, especially for high-ISO walkaround London at night type things?

I think nothing of ISO6400 on the 5D3, it is very very good.
