Well in that case at least the Americans should know what they're potentially up against! Imitation can be counter-productive to some extent.yup... it seems to borrow from both f-22 and f-35 designs... but also is radically different in other areas.
The nose is similar to the F-22
The engine intakes are lifted straight from the F-35
The wings, canards and tail however are something completely new. and the engines in their current form are obviously not optimised for stealth.
Design philosophy for this thing seems to be massive range, high speed and low frontal aspect stealth. Good for long range strikes and loitering.
They are using both Russian and Chinese engines in the prototypes, although I imagine they will be using domestic engines in the production version once the bugs are worked out.

They look like the F-35 intakes, but the F-35 only has one engine uses the internal serpentine shape of the duct to hide the fan. How are they going to do that with 2 engines? It's easy to copy, harder to understand what you're copying.........The nose is similar to the F-22

interestingly his conclusion states...
"Any notion that an F-35 Joint Strike Fighter or F/A-18E/F Super Hornet will be capable of competing against this Chengdu design in air combat, let alone penetrate airspace defended by this fighter, would be simply absurd. The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and F/A-18E/F Super Hornet are both aerodynamically and kinematically quite inferior to the as presented J-XX/J-20 design, and even the shape based VLO capability in the J-XX/J-20, as presented, will effectively neutralise any sensor advantage either type might possess against earlier Russian and Chinese fighter designs."
I was listening to a radio 2 programme the other day ?on the Chinese economy and how it's growth is now to the future. It was said (i'm para phrasing here) that while the Chinese are just interested in coping the west they will never increase substancibly enough to threaten the west's ideology but as soon as they start inventing and developing new out of the box cutting edge stuff the west should be worried and that then they could stand up as a formidable superpower for the next generation.
So it's interesting to see the Chinese concept but I don't think it's a match for our proper fifth generation jca.

The airframe is arguably superior than the F-35 as it is a less compromised design fundamentally.The real battleground from here will be avionics/electronic warfare capabilities in which I believe the F-35 will, at least initially hold the edge.
