Beginning a career in software development

Hi all,

I know that there are vast number of 'pistonheaders' that are in the IT industry so I thought I would post my situation on here.

I graduated this year from the University of East Anglia with a BSc in computer science (2:1) and am looking to begin a career as a software developer. My primary language is Java however I am skilled in C, C++ and Assembly.

I would like to head down the route of java development however would also consider going down he route of embedded software development.

The reason I am posting this on here is to find out if anyone has experienced any good graduate programs or grad training schemes that they would recommend, or can anyone suggest an organisation that are renown for offering good graduate opportunities.

Your advise would be greatly appreciated.

If you fancy embedded software & in the EA area and like it there, search for embedded software in Cambridge. Quite a few companies around there working on various things. From my own experience I'd say that it's the nature/character of the company, the people and the work which is more important than landing a place on a specifically labelled grad programme. Finding a company which will *really* mentor you is the key.

thanks for your response. Yes I forgot to mention I am looking in the Essex region and Cambridge appears to be a large IT hub. A company that can mentor and train me is exactly what I am after. Hopefully some people will respond with some personal experience of recruiting or being recruited by companies in the area.

I live in Colchester and have found a couple however a large proportion vacancies are targeting applicants with experience. I think iv exhausted the vacancies in the are and have now focused my efforts to looking for grad specific schemes.
