If your going for something roof mounted then get a Thule 591.

I was thinking boot mounted but is there any argument for roof mounted?

If you have a towbar I'd go for a Thule that mounts onto it. I've tried racks that fit to the tailgate and always had a nagging doubt they would fall off. The Thule is rock-solid and utterly trustable.

I use a boot mounted Saris Bones on my e46, never had any problems
