What's a camera's lifespan?

I keep looking at second hand DSLRs etc & a question that keeps occurring to me is how many shutter actuations is a camera's lifespan? I mean cars are often said to do about 100k miles, is there a similar figure for a camera? I've seen lots with 10k+ actuations, which sounds a lot. Then I remember that my compact have done more than that in about a years use.
Never wore out a DSLR:
Canon 400d 170K shots - now the wife's pride & joy - 7 years old
40D 213K shots - kept in the tintop at alltimes this has never let me down
-6years old
60D 71K shots last time I looked, don't like the flimsy foldout screen, otherwise a good cam. 18months old
7D 157K Shots - even though it doesn't get used when its damp, slightly dis-appointed with this, though it does take excellent shots in the dry. 2years old
The only DSLR that had a problem was my 50D that would on occasions not fire on highspeed shooting, no other problems with it though, I traded that in for the 60D
HOWEVER I Have had problems with compacts:- Canon G7 still works though the lens sometimes get stuck when I switch it on, I estimate 40K shots
Canon G9 has failed after 13 month's use - only 10K shots, it was the lens totally siezed in the out position, when I queried the cost of repair with canon I decided to buy an alternate camera:-
A Samsung Galaxy S2 to replace it, which to-date is awesome, easy to carry and simple to use and doesn't attract any attention at all.

I always wonder if this is partly due to knocking the on-switch while it's in your pocket and having the lens motor struggle for 30 mins 
I've had 2 Sony compacts and they were both terrible for tuning on at the slightest contact with a trouser pocket or the inside of a bag!
So much so that I took to carrying them in a case just to stop them switching on and either breaking the lens motor or flattening the battery.
I'm looking at buying a Sony RX100 so I hope they have improved things...

avg number for failure on a 400d is 163,014.2
Intrestingly the avg for a 450d is 36,061.0 although that could be to do with being a newer camera but it has been out a couple of years..
