Hi Guys, wonder if anyone has had this fault on their 997 TT

When run from cold I reverse from my drive onto main road, after selecting drive (from reverse) there is a short delay then a slipping sensation (all I can describe it as is a manual car clutch slipping) then there is a clunk of the gear engaging and all is well then... never noticed it when hot just when cold, sometimes far worse than other times.

I bought the car from Dove House this year and to be fair they have been good about it but they are telling me that all 997TT do this and that the car is normal...I would welcome your comments guys!

I dont have the same car (unfortunately), but have experienced similar in the cayenne.

My assumption was that its to do with the gearbox oil temperature, and therefore things arent as slick inside there as when its hot.

I was also told by an indi, that the apparent clunk / groinch in 1st gear (when cold because otherwise 1st is no longer selected) is a part of the intentional design to try and help warm the components from cold......

Someone will no doubt be along to tell us that our gearboxes are lunched and an immediate rebuild is required wink

Thanks for that, on the Tiptronic it selects 2nd gear when going into drive unless you ask for 1st gear.

I do hope its not lunched as Ive only had it 6 months, although Dove House have given a 18 monthh warranty.

No it is not true that all 997 Turbos do that. When the car is first started it is in the most slowest of change modes while temps rise. This is by design.

However you can have a clunk for example if you are as you say cold start and not on flat surface. If you are on an incline it can make more noise but normally from P to R.

It is probably worth having someone taking off the undertray and inspecting the gearbox area for any leaks. This should only take 15-30 minutes getting on ramp and inspecting. Most tiptronic gearbox issues are because of low ATF fluid, which normally it down to a leak, especially since the service schedule on the gearbox is 96,000 miles.

Thanks again, dove house have offered to have the car in again (3rd time) but I wanted to get some feedback before i wasted another 1/2 day drive rthere and back.
FYI the clonk usually comes at cold when reversing from my drive and then going into drive, I don't usually pull away hard either.

Its probably the torque converter locking clutch thing!

It locks in in 2nd gear, and means that the power is applied as normal, rather than the usual auto "revs go up and the speed follows". It does it in all gears except 1st, but you will only really notice it in 2nd.

There is some inf below (OK, its for a 996, but the principle is the same). I am sure you will find more info through google.

In mine, it feels like jerk and the revs change, just like a clutch being being fully engaged, rather than half in and half out.

A better explanation, taken from another forum:

I've got a tip and every once in a while, it will "surge" as you described, though it is pretty subtle and it only happens between 2,000 and 2,500 RPM in second gear.

I've recently learned that the tip torque converter has a lock-up clutch that is programmed to lock-up at certain RPM ranges. This locks the tranny to the engine speed so you get full power transfer. So my guess is that you may be right at the transition of the lock range and the tip computer is locking and unlocking the stator.

thanks guys.
I am not technically minded I just love to drive the car!

What would you suggest if anything needs to be done? Lots of people have indicated the torque converter, should I ask for a new one to be fitted?

If you have already been to them twice for this same issue and they have found nothing. Perhaps ask them if they would be willing for you to take it elsewhere for a diagnostic at their expense and if it also shows up nothing then fair enough and you won't ask them to pay. That would be my advice. Good to get independent eyes on it.
