Do you know what Gypsy Tart is, is it just a Kent thing?

Following a conversation with a friend earlier who was somewhat surprised that his other half (who's from Essex) didn't know what gypsy tart is. So I put it to the PH collective, is Gypsy tart a Kent thing?

I watched it being made on a recent Come Dine With Me so I know how it's made - have no idea what part of the country it's associated with though.

Ah thought it gave you a yes/no to each line you put in! Now amended to hopefully make it clear(er) that I was trying to establish where abouts people who know what gypsy tart is reside.

I live in Rochester, Kent and I've never heard of it...

Going by the name, surely it's not something that is tied to one part of the country?

?? they are all over in cafes and supermarkets, hell adsa usually have them on a stand as you go into the front doors in sittingbourne.

It is a tart of condensed milk and sugar. I've never had it so can't comment on whether it's as disgusting as it sounds, judging by the reaction on this thread it probably is!

Incredibly sweet and I loved it - So much so my Mum asked the school cook how it was made (per the wiki above).

School at that time was in Gravesend, Kent - And as also mentioned earlier, was in the 60s

I had never heard of this before being from Aberdeenshire. However I love sweet things so decided that one was being made last night. It was very nice and very sweet. Will definately have it again.

I was brought up in Sussex and we used to get served this at primary school lunches (in the sixties.....) Rot the enamel off yer teeth !

It was briefly featured on the repeated Hairy Bikers 'Mums Know Best' show last night. This woman brought some to their little food fayre marquee and explained a distant relative of her created it (in Kent), and explained the name. Looked quite appetising, I must say.
