Is the Cayenne S just a big, fat Mini Cooper S?
Discussion
Thinking of chopping in my Mini for the aforementioned Cayenne and came across this:

The similarities in performance are remarkable for two such different cars. On the road would the Cayenne feel much faster? Obviously hustling a two tonne beast has joys all it's own.

All I know that I had a V6 Cayenne for a week, dropped it off at Porsche HQ, fell into the driver's seat of the R50 MINI One I had back then, and by golly did the latter feel like an effing sports car compared to the high rise bloater!
Totally different experience - don't be fooled by the badge, it's the architecture that counts...

If and when I buy a Cayenne, you have convinced me to get the Turbo.
Even if the Cayenne was slower, between the two, I would have it over a Mini anything anyday. I hate the interior and design of Minis.
Of course the Cayenne was not slower. It however felt like a big old, cumbersome, uninvolving truck compared to the MINI, not a hint of sportiness at all. But then again, having to navigate corners when sat on a barstool is one of my pet hates (as, to a lesser extent are torque converter autoboxes). So why on earth were you driving one when you obviously hate everything about them?

Erm, it's part of my job... and the Cayenne is perfectly fine for what it is - a big, road biased 4x4. Just don't expect any sort of driver enticement because it says 'PORSCHE' on the tailgate... the basic architecture works against it.
I thought it was quite relevant to the query as per the thread title. No, the Cayenne is nothing like a big MINI Cooper S. If you want a sporting, interactive driving experience don't get a 2 tonne+ bus.

You're right. It's not. But then neither is it the old shape 4.5S.

Everything is relative. Compared to a Mondeo maybe not. But when I got back into my boggo MINI, from the difference in driving position and the directness of its responses the latter could as well have been a Caterham...Granted that is a latest Cayenne Turbo and not a previous generation V8S ... but all the same very impressive don't you think.
However regardless of the similar performance figures stating that the Mini and the V8S are similar performance wise, the Mini is always going to feel far more nimble and chuckable.
It's a pretty pointless thread as one is a big 2.5 tonne 4x4 family orientated wagon and the Mini is far from being that.
I've had a 1st generation V8S and a 2nd gen V6 ....both are very capable but you have to take them for what they are though.
However comparing either to my wife's Range rover Vogue TDV8 they handle the twisties very well.

It's not that pointless though, because I currently own an MCS and soon(ish) going to be getting a Cayenne. Though I agree they're not the most natural bedfellows. Although it is quite a large bus it soon shrinks around you and confidently piloting it becomes second nature very quickly.
My wife has a FFRR Vogue and it handles far better than that although it is not nearly as comfortable.
I currently run a 911 C2S and if I was to change then it would be for a current Cayenne Turbo.
They are that good.
PS. They are awesome in the snow.
