Nikkor full frame lens suggestions

Hi chaps.

A mate has bought a D600 (moving from DX body) and would like suggestions for a couple of lenses. Both zoom - to cover fairly wide to fairly tele ( 24 ish to 200 or 300 ish?).

He's on a bit of a budget, so I can't recommend the lenses I have or he'll faint, but know nothing of the cheaper equivalents.

Any recommendations?

Well if he's after the sort of range you mention then the 28-300mm VR would be the best 'do it all choice', the full frame equivalent of the popular 18-200 on DX.

Around £700 new I believe.

80-200 F2.8 second hand is about £500 or £600 ? Suppsoed to be a good lens. 28-70 F2.8 is also supposed to bea cracker and about the same money but hard to find.

Or the 24-120 F4 new is about £700 ?

whats the new 24-85? kit lens like?

sigma 24-70/2.8? Tamron 28-70/2.8?

The 28-300 is supposed to be ok if you want an all rounder.
I'd go for the Sigma 24-70 F2.8, it's a really nice lens and it's a lot cheaper than the Nikon equiv. If he can afford a 70-200 F2.8 then go for that as well. A 2nd hand Nikon 70-200 F2.8VR will still get you back close to a grand though. Of course a brilliant cheap FX prime would be a 50mm F1.8.

Hmmmmm ...... is the combination of an excellent FF sensor combined with budget lenses going to be satisfactory?
You could lend him a lens whilst he saves up for some good glass .

Yes it should be, a FF sensor generally gets better results with average glass than a crop would.

I wish you hadn't said that, as somebody who still has my old Nikon 'walk-about' 24-85mm f2.8-4.0
knocking around, I hate being tempted into considering cameras I can't really justify any more .
