Wobbly Windscreen Wiper

Hi

Has anyone suffered from a wobbly windscreen wiper spindle and/or know a remedy? My passenger side wiper spindle moves excessively when operating and looks to have been previously bodged with mastic, sealant or something to that effect... it seems to get at it i need to remove the interior dash which i desperately want to avoid if i can.. so I wondered if anyone knew what the issues could be and if there is a none dash removal fix for this..... any thoughts??

Hi Rich,
Yes I had this exact problem when I first bought my early S1 in Aug 2011.
The wiper spindles were both seized and operating them was trying to turn the whole assembly against the GRP bodyshell, not good. My wipers are rod & bellcrank operated, and I managed to dismantle & strip them without having to remove the dashboard. ( No need to remove wiper motor on mine ) Still a PITA though.
I had to get the spindle bearing tubes in the vice to strip them, then clean them up & lubricate with molybdenum grease.
If yours is cable operated it may be more involved.

PS. Found it, "wiper motor" mike1003003,dated Thurs 9 Feb 2012.

ETA Be VERY careful not to operate the wipers with hands/ fingers/ wrists near the mechanism, it will not stop for flesh or bone.
Pull the fuse or disconnect the battery.

Had a similar problem with mine, the bit that the eight sided nut screws onto had rusted right through and become detached from the rest of it.

New wheelbox was the only proper cure. Did them both while I was at it (they are different).

One is a fairly common ratio, probably available from places like this but the other is an unusual ratio, probably not unique to TVR but not readily available, can't remember which is which though. In the end I bought the pair from a now defunct TVR supplier about 18 months ago, £66.60 with the vat & postage. Think David Gerald here in Redditch bought up most of their stock, be interesting to see what the price is now ?

Fitting them is not a five minute job, I had the whole dash out anyway to sort a couple of other "issues"

Ahhhh ok thanks... I suspect knowing my luck it'll be your fix ;-) might have to use some very strong contact adhesive to get through MOT next month then do it over the winter..

There's probably an easier way, but I found it by going to my profile page - --forums - 210 to 240 days ago - my replies .
"wiper motor" is the last one on that list. (at the moment)

Hi Rich, first thing is to check if yours is cable operated or crank operated like Glen's and mine. They require different approaches for a permanent solution. Regrettably neither is easy but bits for the crank operated type do not seem to be available and I had to have a part made. Have a look and let us know.
Incidentally, for anyone with a crank type, the wiper motor was unobtainable when I tried, but I found it wasnt that difficult to modify a Peugeot 405 motor to fit! Cost me £10 and they are easy to get out (although not that easy to find these days). I have the notes and the wiring colour connections somewhere.

Which ever system you have any problems with bits that should turn not turning or bits that shouldn't turn turning will probably also lead to a water leak, water collects in those wiper indents a treat.
May not do any major harm except musty smelly carpets ?

As I found to my cost, if the passenger side spindle mounting leaks it drips right onto the heater motor! The heater motor rusts...then burns out! Again that motor isnt available (it is an old AC Delco). But a rad fan motor from an early Punto can be adapted to fit! Again notes/pics available.
