New Position for Senior Automotive Engineer
Discussion
A vacancy has come around with ourselves.
We are based in between Swindon and Salisbury and build bespoke track/race cars. We are looking for an engineer with over 6 years experience working within this environment.
You will need to have a hands on approach, but be able to stand back and think a problem through.
Ideal experience in the following:
General mechanics
Welding
Electrics
Engineering and Fabrication
CAD
Engine and transmission rebuilds
The salary range is £25,000 to £32,000
We are not looking for someone that is fresh out of university, this is a senior position and I need someone that can walk in and hit the ground running!

I don't want to be facetious, but I'd hardly call that a Senior Automotive Engineer, that's surely a technician role? Never met a "senior engineer" who has to do welding as part of their job...
Exactly! Salary seems to be on the low side for the experience required too. The reason I have put Senior is down to the fact that last time I advertised I received a lot of emails from recent grads, and that isnt what I need!
I need someone that is an all round person, so yes welding is required! However, its not like Im asking for MOT welding!
Not sure why you think £32k is too low?

I think they were questioning your use of engineer rather than that of senior!I need someone that is an all round person, so yes welding is required! However, its not like Im asking for MOT welding!

You are searching for a very wide range of skills for this position though, I'm not sure I've ever dealt with anyone who could tick all your boxes.

I do agree the word engineer is slightly overused these days, but I would consider our workers as more of an engineer than a domestic engineer is in reality is a cleaner! You are searching for a very wide range of skills for this position though, I'm not sure I've ever dealt with anyone who could tick all your boxes.
This is probably quite true, but they do exist I have one currently

The total lwasn'tasnt a must, it was more a case of as many as possible!

Are we not just sitting on semantics now?
I don't think so. I'd expect a senior engineer to either be degree qualified or have very extensive experience and for them to be rarely getting their hands dirty.I'd expect a mechanic to be doing the things listed.
If I only did what was in my job title, I'd have a much easier life...

Jonty you sound like you want one of the ex-TVR type lads.
Your problem will be finding someone who has the mechanical and electrical engineering skills with the CAD design skills.

Not how things work in the down and dirty side of automotive engineering.

Not too worried about the CAD design skills...certainly the lowest priority on the list front. As long as they can use paper and pen to make a drawing of parts that need to be manufactured I would be more than happy!

I do apologise if my post sounded a bit insulting. I've read on your OP and I've got the impression that you are looking for ""Senior Automotive Engineer with minimum 6 years experience". I would've thought the salary range would start at a higher rate for that level of experience and qualifications. I could be wrong though!crazy about cars said:

You can spend 5 years at University gaining a good masters degree, another 5 gaining experience, and someone who has been on a 1 week project management course will earn more than you.

I have a degree in Mech Eng and another MSc in Electronics but I've chosen the IT path as that's where my true passion/interest lies... Mind you a few of my mates who graduated and went into Engineering is doing pretty well now. This was almost 10 years ago though!
edit : Do agree about the Management bit... it seems managers earn much higher salary per experience level. I'm relatively new to the IT industry but after having 2+ years of solid experience I see a new Manager come in and automatically starts at a salary very close to my current
I really don't want to whine but this makes me want to try to break into management someday (I'm mostly doing technical stuff)Edited by crazy about cars on Friday 5th October 13:42

Hey guys...really?
I welcome your feedback, but can you take your conversation elsewhere please? No offence but it isnt going to help me find someone for the job.

It sounds as if you want a good mechanic with a high level of engineering knowledge, for not a lot of money. It could well be a good job though.
FWIW, very few of my peers had ever taken apart an engine when I was an engineering undergraduate.
