DxO Optics Pro 7

I downloaded the demo version of DxO Optics Pro 7 mostly to try out the automatic lens distortion correction as I'm not happy with some of the results which come from my Tamron 18-270mm straight off camera. It appears to work very well and I was also surprised with the noise reduction and exposure correction results. It even manages to process JPGs well.

I've only had an hour or two to play with it. Does anybody use it in anger regularly and be willing to give their opinion on it?

From what I can tell, the automatic distortion correction is unmatched in Lightroom and CaptureNX. What else out there offers similar capabilities in this dept?

Capture One Pro might do it, though I don't have the latest version.

I use it to convert my RAW files to DNG before cataloguing in Lightroom. It is excellent for automatic lens distortion and softness correction provided the modules for your camera and lenses are available. There is a huge range of supported cameras and lenses which is growing all the time. If your particular combination isn't supported, you can suggest it to DxO and they may implement it if there is enough demand.

Chromatic abberration and purple fringing is automatically corrected as well but they can also be tweaked if results aren't perfect. The noise reduction is also better than most.

I had some problems initially with colour accuracy when converting RAWs but selecting the camera profile rather than DXO's default gives me very accurate colours.

I use it to spit out corrected RAWs prior to major tinkering in Lightroom. I posted a thread about it a little while ago but nobody replied so I downloaded a demo and then bought the full version. It is a useful part of my workflow and an under-rated piece of software IMO.

Sounds this could be a useful weapon in my campaign to buy my way to better photography! How much is it gents ?

The float-over correction preview is a nice feature and shows you what it's done to a photo in a cool way.

I'm just poking about with the trial version. I can drag from Explorer to preview panel, the presets look good and it automatically found the plugins for the camera/lens combos. On the down side I can't get histogram and curves combined, highlight recovery appears to be shadow recovery, and every change or undo takes 2-3 seconds, which gets annoying. Will have another look later.
