What happened to my Garmin this morning???

Pootling in to work, I suddenly got a beep off my Edge 800. Looked down to see a message about auto-power off, and did I want to continue. I assumed this just meant the battery was getting low, but as I was less than a mile from the office, I just pressed "yes" and rode the rest of the way in.

When I put it on to charge in the office, however, it still had 57% battery power. Also, I uploaded the ride to Strava and got a really weird result.

If you look on the performance tab under "distance" everything is fine, but if you look at it under "time", there is a straight line on every setting for 15 minutes between minute 55 and minute 70.

What happened? I don't think I managed to accidentally turn it off, and as it sits on the stem, my hands aren't anywhere near it when I'm riding. Somewhat bemused!

At a guess, when the auto power off prompt is shown, the device stops tracking anything new (by design or by software limitation) and when you dismissed the prompt it continued.

I think that's partly right, but a bit back to front. Presumably it stopped tracking anything new for 15 minutes to trigger the auto-off, but I don't know why it did that!

At a guess, the Earth's magnetic polarity reversed causing all the GPS satellites to fall out of the sky, but the mice hit the reset button and did a system restore.

OP no idea what went wrong, but if it's any consolation mine recently showed a maximum pace on an mtb ride of over 2,400 mph. I rock!

As I suspected. My suspicions were aroused by Kermit power's tale, but Digga's post has confirmed it. You were both abducted by aliens. It's the only possible explanation for the missing segment, the time distortion, and a speed of 2,400mph.

It's all to do with the state of the economy, you see. The Government is colluding with the aliens, in return for access to advanced technology, in order to re-establish the Empire, and Britain's position as the worlds greatest industrial and commercial superpower.
