(FAO : walm and will_ : this is not anti-cyclists)

This morning at the traffic lights at junction of Hobart Place / Grosvenor Gardens. Lady cyclist coming goes through what must have been a red light (it was green for us).

I see her mouth the words "oh st"!!.

For those that know that junction, Hobart Place is one way, 4 lanes. Unfortunately a motorcyclist clips her rear wheel and she balloons into the air. Thankfully she was fine (judging by the fact that she jumped up and ran over to the poor motorcyclist f'ing and blinding). Her bike looked mashed.

Anyway she was very lucky. If it had been a car / van she could have been seriously hurt.

Was the Biker ok?

Cant help but feel that as much as you don't want this to turn into a "burn all cyclist" thread, it will do before it gets to page 2

It's valuable advice I'll not deny, but I must say - not being an idiot, I already know that there's bound to be traffic coming from other directions if I go through a red light. Seems she didn't.

If we could turn it into a "burn stupid cyclists", that'd be awesome.

I saw a guy this morning who ticked basically every box. Dark clothing, no lights, went straight through a (long time red) light, on a dual carriageway which has a wide and good cycle path along side it.

I'm a pretty relaxed daily cyclist, but cars red light jumping during the commute is rife around the edgbaston part of Birmingham and really boils my piss. I'm super vigilant at junctions now.

Yes he was - there looked to be some minor damage to the front of the bike. He stopped across the lights and looked dumb-founded to be honest

Very fair point yes If there's no red light camera, at short junctions and long queues people (cars) can really take the mick.

Why did she mouth 'oh st'? Sounds like not paying attention rather than a deliberate jumping the red to me. Still daft though obviously, hope the biker wasn't too shook up.

edit : ah. failed to read op, I thought shed come flying past and said it rather than coming from another direction.

Eh!? Did you ignore the (2) posts of mine criticising the cyclist?

Because she jumped the light and then saw the motorbike? It's fine jumping red lights, until it isn't, at which point the resulting accident is probably quite bad. I could save 5 minutes not waiting for lights on my commute, or I could get to work 5 minutes later and not risk it. Sounds like she was very lucky!

She was extremely lucky. If it had been me (or many people I know) on the motorcycle she might have got a face full of carbon fibre knuckle protectors coming over and shouting the odds after causing an accident. Still, stupid is as stupid does.

Indeed - didn't want to make a big point of this but her reaction having caused the accident was extraordinary - as though somehow the guy on the motorcycle was at fault for not managing to avoid her !

1. The woman was totally in the wrong to jump the red light. To the poster who said she might have missed the red light rather than jumped it on purpose - so effing what? She jumped a red light. She's a danger and should have the book thrown at her.

2. Pothole - you'd punch her? Why? Are you some sort of knuckledragging chavscum or something?

3. It's possible the motorbike could have done more to avoid hitting her. My experience of cycling and driving in London is that motorbikes do have a tendency of nailing it away from the lights, which would make it harder to slow enough to avoid such collisions.

If say the biker had come off and done several thousand pounds of damage to their bike, how do they go about claiming off the cyclists who jumped the red light?

Would they ever see it?

1. Absolutely. No excuses.

2. Quite possibly. She could have killed me and then had the temerity to blame me? Prime candidate for some corporal punishment. Just as it was probably shock which made her act the way she is alleged to have, that same shock would probably cause me to act out of character, too.

3. So you want bikers to check that there are no stupid cyclists jumping their red light before pulling away on green? fk that.

Yes.

Green doesn't just mean "go".

Anyone (cyclist, driver, motorcyclist) going through a green light should check for anything (cyclist, driver motorcyclist) coming through the red lights on the opposite traffic.

(I stress, that doesn't make what the cyclist did right in any way what so ever).

that bit I can understand - IME, with the exception of accidents where one party is clearly injured and the other is fine (when basic human compassion takes over), most people's reaction seems to be: blame the other party then work out who's at fault. Adrenaline I suspect, the prevailing attitude of 'admit fault and you will be sued' can't help.

I can also understand, even if I don't necessarily agree with someone deciding the junction is clear and jumping the light - they don't want to waste time and think it's not going to affect anyone. I can understand someone donning hi-vis and a helmet only to ride on the pavement (seen it) - they're scared, probably too much but there you go. I can understand most bad habits on bike or in car.

But the people who ride with no sense of self-preservation whatsoever - that really does boggle the mind, doesn't it? How can it not occur to you that the giant metal things moving around at high speed might hurt you if you don't take at least some steps to prevent them hitting you? That's not a rhetorical question, I really would like to know.

You do that, do you, at every set of lights? Of course you don't.

I do. I look around me at every junction, set of lights and roundabouts. What's more amazing to me is that you seem not to. Pretty sure I was encouraged to do so to pass my driving test.
