Was there ever an official half cage in the RS ? I always thought that the only cage was the m002 matter cage with a full front and dash section, the sane as an RSR cage but just missing the extra crossing piece across the doors.
I am thinking about fitting a welded in cage but a part of me does not want the a pillar sections or the pieces across the door. That said, i want a significant upgrade in chassus stiffness and also would like to preserve factory originality.

Jackal, M002 is the regular 993RS, it was the M003 CS variant which had the welded in full matter cage.
Most bolt in cages fitted at the time were Heigo, who I beleive are no longer in business.
Having driven/owned both the bolt in cages are ok to mount your harness belts, but the bolt in cage is hardly noticeable compared to it's absence, you need a welded in cage if you are concerned about rigidity.
You can only really feel the difference on track, or on the road when you bump your head on it!

993RS CS models for Australia had a dealer installed bolt-in cage due to local regulations, so that could be considered original. I haven't seen a good bolt in full cage, they all interfere with window winders, door pulls etc. Better to go the whole way and get a welded in M003 cage but that means bare shell fitting/respray. Might as well go for sunroof delete while you're at it. Single down tube CS door guard is not that intrusive, just have to lift the leg over. Double tube Cup/RSR is more work.

Would you get any worthwhile stiffness in just a rear weld in cage? Or could you create a handling imbalance by having a "tight" back end & a "loose" front?
This is my worry .. Would it actually help much.LaurasOtherHalf said:
Do you actually feel the structure needs stiffening? I only ask as in the past you've said an RS clone interior would reduce the practicality of your car thus your enjoyment?
yes i do ... i find the chassis soft as hell and would love to stiffen it up and add some torsional rigidityride and handling and road manners are spot on now (although its taken 3 years to get there !)
have the clubby front brace at the front so a cage is the next natural step
I have also decided to remove the rear seats in any case .... its only very rarely that anyone else gets in it
might try and source some proper RS buckets as well and go the whole hog
