Carpet Replacement

Just contemplating my winter jobs, assuming I get the inclination..

Has anyone had a go at replacing all of the carpet in their S? I know Lakewell.com do a complete set of S carpet (24 pieces), but was hoping for a slightly cheaper option.

I am assuming that the pieces are all flat and just glue to the curvature of the interior!!

Any tips or experience gratefully received.

Not done it but I'd imagine the bits around the top seat belt mounts would be the most difficult to get neat, lots of double curvature and of course they are the most visible areas.

lots of photo's, lots of notes as you tear pieces out and lots of glue !!!!

I have invested in a carpet set, the 2 footwell sections and plan to use our ex hall and landing carpet, which is a remarkably good match colourwise, cut sliced and glued, with a sound deadening heat resistant underlay as noted on another thread on here. There are lots of awkward corners but I have a sharp knife and dev-weld glue, probably search out some replacement tan leather seats as well. Should be good for those cold wet days in winter.

S2mike, please elaborate? You say you have bought a carpet set, but also intend to use the hall carpet??

Do you mean you have bought car mats, but will use the hall carpet for the rest of the interior?

Also, not sure I will need to put noise absorbing material down first. I usually only drive with roof down, so wind and exhaust drown out everything else!!

When you've finished, would appreciate some photos, to see how well it looks!!;-)

Thats it I bought a good quality "carpet set" that is just the 2 footwell mats, then plan to use the good bits of our old hall carpet sliced and diced and glued, for the rest of the interior. The discussion on the other thread covered this and road noise and heat from the engine/gearbox tunnel can be reduced with the underlay.I have a dark brown leather dash and seats so also plan a vinyl paint in a tan colour, plus a pair of seats or seat covers. This will be my winter project as well so see you in the Spring.

Hi. At present I am about half way through re-carpeting my S2. I purchased a semi industrial sewing machine on ebay for £70. 4 2mtr sqs of carpet £10 each, 2 cans of adhesive £10 each 1 3sq of fire proof under felt £15, all these items from Martrim, check out their website, good outfit to deal with. 15mtrs of 30mm vynal carpet edging from Coverdale, on ebay. I have finished the passenger side and just started the drivers side, which is a bit easier due to not having that 'ba***rd' shelf arrangment holding the electrics. That took near on 2 days to sort. Stitching the edging to the carpet is probably the most difficult part of the job, stuck it on first with a hot melt glue gun then ran it through the sewing machine, it needs practice! I've just been researching a bit, there's a 4 - page article on S full carpet replacement, very well written by Andrew Carrie, in the Feb 2012 issue of Sprint Mag.,p34.

He bought a pre-cut set from Belgium, which, although more expensive, obviated the need for a heavy-duty sewing machine and doing all that edge trim.

I'm not sure that using domestic carpet is a good idea, marine quality carpet from a chandlery supplier won't degrade, rot or mould in the inevitable dampness of an S footwell (Think Chatsworth 2012 ). Unless you live in Arizona or Mali.

Good point Glen.
Hope this will work as it is a stainmaster, quality busy area grade. That our dog has managed to chew through in several places, so rather than waste the whole lot, as it is roughly the right colour, I thought why not.........
May try to solve some, if not all of the leaks before veturing out in the wet weather.
Will go have a look at the pre-cut info before starting, as I have nervous wait today with mine in for MOT, there may be other jobs to do first!!

I must admit, having read it all last night, I don't think I appreciated the volume of work necesary to replace them all!! I may just do the front half (which are perished), and see if I can get some dye to bring the rear carpets back to navy blue.
