So, there I was a-lorrying along the M9 this afternoon when the scenery opened up to my right and the perfect vista was laid out before me (well, to the side of me).

There was the biggest, most vivid rainbow I'd ever seen and the rightmost end of it had perfectly "landed" right on top of Stirling Castle, itself bathed in bright sunlight and the centre arched perfectly over the Wallace Memorial in the distance.

Seriously, this was one of those once-in-a-lifetime, picture-postcard scenes - a photograph of which I could have sold to the Scottish Tourist Board for one million pounds (or groats or punts or whatever they use up here).

Ironically and frustratingly, my camera kit was in its bag on the bunk right behind my seat. However, I think the authorities might take a dim view of wielding a DSLR whilst piloting an articulated lorry - and I doubt if the "I was just testing the effectiveness of the VRII 'Active' setting" defence would have cut much ice in court.

So, as quickly as it appeared, my dream shot was gone.

Has anyone else missed out on that perfect shot?

Yes, Dedham Valley in a 'calendar' sunset mist with the tops of the trees poking through. By the time I got back with my camera 15 mins later it had gone.

I last saw my Mrs naked in 1987 when she left the bathroom door ajar

I know! I thought there would be a few more stories. I guess they're all much better, more prepared photographers than us...

saw some bh in just a fur coat running around the back garden of Beckingham palace yesterday, mind you it might have been a male fox, rather than a female wink

More seriously - I was sitting watching a stoat hunting one time I'd left the camera at home when out walking (it's heavy and I was having shoulder problems frown )

One that didn't get away - but almost did

It's happened so many times I find it hard to single out a particular one. Usually early mornings on the way to work.

I've always got my camera with me now, when I'd just started out I carried my camera nearly everywhere, one time I was out without it I came across the North Yorkshire Moors with a cloud inversion, I was at the top of the moor and could see cloud with other hills poking out below me in the valley. It was simply superb, and I missed it.

There was a wonderful perfect rainbow completely enveloping my house last week. I noticed it as I left to walk my dog. I rushed back to the house to get the camera and as I went back outside it started raining and the f'ing rainbow disappeared frown

A couple of years ago I came over the bridge looking towards Arundel Castle.
Its base was shrouded in fog and every window was reflecting the weak Autumnal sun.
Camera was at home as usual!

Not so much a missed shot, more a cocked up opportunity. Took this shot on the way back from Fort William one day, took the long way back via Crianlarich and Loch Earn and took this shot as the clouds parted at sunset.

Not realising that i had left my D200 at ISO 1000 for some strange reason. which is way past the D200 limits for producing a reasonably un-noisy image.

Glad I have the 5d mk2 now so when im an idiot the results are not as bad.

So many shots missed either because I didn't ahve the camera with me, the battery was flat or I had the wrong lens on and by the time I changed it the moment had passed.

One that springs to mind was getting getting choppered back form the rig (around 100 miles off Aberdeen) after being stuck on due to overtime, snow and lightening storms. The usual trip is two weeks but I'd done a month in total.

The pilot was making his way through snowstorms by skirting round them, we were at around 5000ft and the view of multiple snowstorms from the clear air was amazing. The sun was pretty low too so the light was perfect. They looked a little like unsuported waterfalls.

Of course you're not allowed electrical items on your person in the chopper so not even a camera phone.

I was sitting in a supplier's yard just South of Thirsk on Tuesday, waiting to be loaded, still mucking about with the camera.

I'd heard and seen a Tornado buzzing around, but it had been too far away for even the 200mm end of the zoom to be of any use.

Then, the bd came past at what looked like a few feet off the ground, a few hundred yards from me, sideways with the belly facing me.

By the time I'd woken up and pointed the camera in roughly the right direction, I managed to get this:

Bugger.
