Interesting to see a comment here - different topic so I am starting a new one - saying that .2 RSs smoke a lot on start up.

I had a 6.2 GT3 that used to smoke once in a while. My 7.2 RS smoked like a Native American telegraphing the Ryder Cup results. Only for a few seconds, most times but not every time. Also in 4,500 miles it has barely used any oil.

I had it in the OPC for a check up and an oil change and asked them to leave it overnight and see what they thought. They left it over the weekend and when I picked it up they said there was no evidence of any smoke.

And ever since it has been back - rarely any smoke and only a little puff like my old GT3.

What do you reckon? Oil change to thicker oil, a bottle of Slick 50 (!!!), some other adjustment?

Surely, it can't have just stopped?

mine did that too, i mentioned it to the service dept and they reassured me that it was nothing to be concerned about and an explanation (i can't recollect what that was to be honest) - didn't do it always, mainly after it had been sat for a sustained period (over 3/4 weeks) and it soon cleared. didn't use any oil either under my tenure, 5k miles.

Both my cars have done it a few times.

Can be a tad embarrassing at times....

I get smoke occasionally on start up(4.0RS), again usually if the car has not been used for a week or two.
No real rime or reason, sometimes no smoke, sometimes a little puff, sometimes a little more than a little puff!
I spoke to Reading(even sent a video of it), "they all do that sir" was the reply recevied, nothing to worry about.
I allways park it exhausts facing out of the garage so any smoke clears without a problem.

I also have a 996RS, that did smoke on occasion on start up but less than the 4.0.
With millage the smoke issue with the 996 became less apparent, how many miles have you done in your 7.2?

I thought that OPCs normally blamed this on it sitting idle for a while and excess oil making its way into the cylinder in small quantities and just burning off on start up. Might have imagined that.

What I find intriguing is that mine smokes so much less after the visit to the OPC at 4k miles.

Do they refill with different/thicker oil than delivery/running in oil?

I notice that mine smoked a lot more than the 6GT3, worringly so at first.

Someone mentioned to me recently that it is the dry sump system retaining pressure and pushing oil into the bores, that then lies there due to the boxer configuration.

There does not seem to be a pattern to the smoke ( except of course on cold start up ). Some days there s lots, others none or little. Makes no differnce if I park it nose in or tail in either and I ve a slight slope. Great cars though, I love the noise it makes on start up .

It is a great car - a really great car.

I miss the rawness of the 6.2 GT3 but this is a much better car. So capable and to paraphrase a well known member here, I don't feel it is trying to kill me when I am pressing on.

It is a bit strange, but as others have said it's hard to predict when the car will decide to billow out smoke. The 997 GT3s do seem more prone - both my 4.0 and 3.8 do it a lot (50% of start ups, unless warm when it is rare); my 996 GT3RS very rarely does it.

There is no delivery / running-in oil - its Mobil 1 0W40 from the start.

Cheers

My 4.0 also likes to leave a smoke blanket in the garage upon start-up. Especially if it has not been used for a while. Once up and running there is no trace of smoke so no reason to worry. "they all do that" seems to apply based on this limited sample of 3.

Both my 3.6 and 3.8 RS do it periodically. Part of the ownership experience like the bag-of rattles idle.

Does anyone apart from myself have any embarrassing moments connected with this issue ??
I don't really mind it happening in the garage, but when you've parked the car on the street and on return there's a bit of an audience - cameras in hand, I do have this thought in my mind, will it or won't' it ??
Mostly it doesn't, but on the occasion it does it is a bit embarrassing, and I do wonder what some people must think, not that I'm that bothered in the scheme of things !!

I must admit that the thought has crossed my mind, pulling out of a hotel forecourt in a cloud of smokesmile

Yes. Mine does it if left for about 6-8 hours, but not so much overnight for 12+ hours.
