Boxter 2.7 tip. Ims failure
Discussion
About 4 months ago I purchased a 2000 Baxter 2.7 tip with 107000 miles on the clock. About 1000 miles later I started to hear a ticking noise on idle, sounded like a sticky tappet. Read some forums and found that it could also be the exhaust manifold blowing from the gasget, I checked this but could not find anything. I had wondered about the ims but just didn't sound like it was coming from there so as it was running fine I left it. 2000 miles later I was coming home from a weekend away when some boy racer wanted to rub my rear bumper at 100 mph. A bit annoyed I throttled up to 142mph and that's when trouble set in. The engine light started to flicker and the car started to cough a little. Slowing down I realised that the ticking was now quite loud, oops. Turned it off and had it recovered home. Oil filter out and stump off revealed lots of metallic particles IMS bearing. As I think I can save the engine as it still ran I am having the the engine removed so I can strip it down and rebuild it. I will post more when engine is stripped and I know the depth of the damage. Moral so far, if you hear a ticking check for IMS damage. Has anyone on here had the same thing and how bad was the damage?
Forget to say was in Germany lol. Also is a boxster not a Baxter as my galaxy s3 spelt. To add a bit more I have had some horrendous quotes for repairing this engine from £2500 up to £6000. The ims bearing and intermediate shaft alone is £1000 from porsche with the vat. I'm expecting this fix to cost me around £2000 as I will replace other parts as well. Seems to me that if you have a porsche people want to charge the earth to fix it, hello this is just an engine right and there are no components made of gold inside. Can't wait to get this car back on the road the 2.7 tip is an awesome car to drive in my opinion.

I think Hartech can replace just the bearing on the intermediate shaft, which should cost a lot less. www.hartech.org
Yep your right there but this engine was starting to rattle, I believe it's called the death rattle just before it totals itself. I believe I've saved it in time but I will definitely be replacing the shaft as well. I had thought of just doing the retro fit ims but there was a lot of metallic in the oil and have been told this is a major problem if the engine is not pulled apart and cleaned out properly. It could affect oil distribution and damage other components if it's not dealt with. I have read quite a lot now on ims bearing and think the price is a complete rip off. Second hand boxsters are now much more affordable to buy but you really need to do some homework first as the cost to have fixed can just be mental.
