Thinking of getting a Cayman R
Discussion
Not had the 997S that long but recently went out as a passenger in a friend of a friend's Cayman R and I have to say it felt so nice that I'm seriously tempted to swap. I normally keep hold of my cars for 2-4 years as a rule and selling after just 4 months, especially after spending so long looking for a good car and making sure everything is perfect, feels like the wrong thing to do. Am I mad?
I've had a look at what cars are available at the moment but nothing really grabs me so I'm not in a rush to make a decision but I just wondered if anyone else has made the switch over and whether they regretted it.
If anyone does know of a mint manual R with Spyder wheels, buckets and PSE though, please do let me know

Interesting to hear your observations. I'm on my second Box but starting to think about next car. 997.2S and R both on my list. There was another thread recently about whether people moving from boxster to 911 felt it was a good move and quite a few didn't with some saying the R was a better move or make a bigger jump and go to a GT3. Either way is getting to point where I am wondering if a 997s should be on my list.
Will keep track of this thread. Good luck with the hunt if you do move. I notice a lot of Rs out there are PDK which I suspect is what you're finding too.

Had a similar dilemma between 997.2 s and an R. I chose the latter and so far have absolutely no regrets. It depends what you use it for- mine is pretty much a weekend car and as such the PSE and buckets are great. Might be a pain if used every day particularly for those of a more generous build (as amusingly demonstrated by a pal today!)
Try one and decide- ultimately both are great cars.

Yes, love the bucket seats but that maybe helped by the fact that I'm built like a racing snake
I originally bought the 997 as an everyday car, but pretty much as soon as I bought it I ended up working in Holland Tues-Fri so the focus has shifted somewhat to a more 'weekend' oriented car. Still have the Elie for track work though
Anyway, put the car up on PH classifieds earlier. If it sells, then I can go shopping - if not then the decision is made for me!

Being relatively new to the Porsche world, I was amazed to find just how many Boxster and Cayman owners won't go the route of a 911 because they don't feel as special; having now experienced a few drives and ownership, I'd tend to agree strongly with this maybe with the exception of a 911 GT3 of course I've had a look at what cars are available at the moment but nothing really grabs me so I'm not in a rush to make a decision but I just wondered if anyone else has made the switch over and whether they regretted it.

Cayman R is without doubt a fantastic car, I really can't think of anything that comes close unless spending serious money on something like a GT3 or 430/458. It punches well above its weight.
Having said that, toying with the idea of selling mine just because the damn thing doesn't get used and don't have the option of storing it away. Might be an opportunity for you there worldwidewebs

As much as I like the GT3 I'm not really attracted to it as a purchase proposition - I've no idea why really as I always thought that's what I'd get when I was in a position to do so. At the moment I think if I swap it will be to a Cayman and the R is the front runner, although I've yet still to actually drive one. Oddly, I'm also attracted to the 2.9 (and not driven that either) as I'm sure it'd be quick enough in the real world and I just wonder whether it would be more enjoyable extracting the power it does have.

Get down to an OPC and take the opportunity to drive a CR whilst you can, as they are becoming quite rare in the showrooms/forecourts and at least then it will give you a clearer idea what you want. Better to waste the time of a dealer and try one out then buy private.iandews said:

a few more coming up 2nd hand now though so why buy OPC stock at those high rates, buyers market and all that !!!jontymo said:
Not many around now, porsche only have a few used in stock and again not many new although OPC Leeds have a new one but with normal seats and PDK, up a 63k from what i remember which is why i bought the demo??

I remember seeing a green one in there a couple of months back when i was there in the showroom... It looked immense with the showroom lights... much better than pictures portray IMO.jontymo
There wasn't many around when I was looking 3 months back so I assume the choice is even more scarce now.

Porsche's site lists just nine cars, including at least one ex-press demo car. They look a bit strong on the money side for my taste given the price of a nicely specified Gen.2 S. Great cars though, and I can see why people pay the premium. As said above though, I'd let the 981 come out before buying now - partly to see how much it'd be (and what it'll be like), but also because I reckon it'll depress 987c prices, particularly those that are floating around the 45-50k mark, as most Rs are. I know there's an argument for Cayman R models having better residuals due to limited numbers, but I don't see it as having quite the same halo as the GT 997 models...
