Gear box

Any ideas on upgrading?

2nd gear for me is always a bit stiff and though not a problem is a bit annoying. Are there any proven upgrades?

Hi Hoyin I've spent the last .4 years trying to get a perfect gear shift , started with a 5 speed then on to a 6 , 3 different gearshift units and after all that the shift into 2nd is still crap !!!! Better when hot impossible when cold , everyone tells me they all do it so I guess I've got to keep going to see if I can work out exactly what the problem is !!!!! A M400 upgrade is a lot better and a good upgrade , next change for me is a different oil to see if that helps .

Tux - have you done the M400 upgrade?

Is it worth it? I was looking at the USA - Hoover short shift upgrade as well.

Are there no other options?

Hi Hoyin yep M400 upgrade but I designed my own short shifter to improve on the std M400 item .

Tux - the short shifter has made the problem worse

you have less leverage

try a longer gear stick to see if you can get some leverage back

also antishock gear oil may help

Tux - does it change ok into 2nd if you double declutch ?

i reckon your syncro ring is slipping and not allowing the shaft speeds to match

who built the box was it brand new syncro rings ?

Leveridge not a problem , when the box oil is up to 80degrees it's shifts fine , trouble is that takes 30 miles !! Gearbox man box , selectors new along with 5 th gear shaft , it's a common problem with the box , only thing I have noticed is when I start from cold with the handbrake off the car try's to move !!!! Only when cold but clearly something is dragging !!!!

if the clutch is dragging - it could just be rust on the surface of the flywheel

or the plate is warped

can anything be done to increase the stroke of the release mechanism ?

Hi Gadge box not overfilled , oil was supplied to me by the gearbox man it's Lodexol FS. 75w 90 fully synthetic by Morris oils .

do you know the viscosity of the std noble gear oil ?

Sounds like something isn't right, release bearing might be shot if it's dragging, on the TVR's AP clutch it's a common problem.

Unfortunately Quaife only recommend 75/90 for the diff...

i got sick of it being stiff to get into 2nd while cold, 2 things i did improved it 300%.
I added a gear box additive to the normal oil to reduce friction, i sprayed all the linkages with wd40, it worked and i think it is down to the oil additive, the gearbox is also pretty much silent.

i run the antishock gear oil

its viscosity is the same as 70/90 but it has lower friction

According to the Gearbox man, the antishock oil is bad for the gearbox. He recommended a good 75w90

he told me 10 years ago that std oil is all the gearbox needs and a decent oil cooler

however

the antishock oil is the only thing that stops the gearboxes of big power cars from breaking

there are 3 grades superlight, light and heavy

(heavy is for a dog box)

i can imagine getting the heavy gear oil out of the diff may be a problem if you had a warranty issue (quaife atb has lifetime warranty)

the Quaife atb does not use the viscosity of the oil to transmit the power from left to right like an LSD but uses worm gears instead
