Morning all,
I changed jobs in the last financial year, and have found out that I'm due a tax rebate.
I have a quick question that I'm hoping someone might know the answer to, though... On my earnings for the last tax year, the figure they have calculated is much higher than I actually earned. What does this mean? That I've actually paid too much tax and the rebate should be higher? Or that I might actually owe the tax man more money?
I'm happy to settle the difference if there's a shortfall, but I was hoping that I might actually be in line for a bigger rebate!
The amount they think I earned was approx £20k above what I actually earned, therefore does that mean the tax I paid was based on the higher figure, meaning that I overpaid? For example, if the figure they thought I earned was lower, then surely I would be expected to pay less, meaning I've overpaid by a significant amount?
Any advice would be appreciated!

At this stage, I would be asking your current and previous employer for an explanation as to why your earnings are stated incorrectly?
I assume you were on PAYE throughout so you should have paid the correct amount of tax on your correct level of earnings - if you reclaim some of the tax paid on the unexplained supplementary earnings this is theft as you haven't actually suffered that tax in the first place!
Get your paperwork sorted to agree the earnings and your reclaim should look after itself after that.

David, thanks.
It would seem my previous employer has reported double my earnings to the tax office, which differs from my actual PAYE statement (very strange)
This differs from the amount on my P45/P11D so hopefully I can prove I'm due the rebate. Could I ask whether you know if that means I can claim back some National Insurance too? Just a thought.
Appreciate you taking the time to help out
