....as I've gone and broken my elbow frown

I was over in Belgium for a week long meeting, and one of the evening activities was a nice cycle ride around the fantastic cycle routes they have near the hotel we were staying in. A mobile meeting we call them as we all inevitably end up discussing the meeting content anyway.

So there I was riding along chatting to a colleague on the smooth tarmac part/road when we go around a slight bend but there is gravel on the surface, the line of riders slow a little as do I but because of the silly back-to-front European brakes I manage to lock the front wheel and next thing I know I'm in a heap with the bike on top of me.

Up I get, dust myself down, have a swear as I've bent my glasses, then realise the front wheel of my bike (hired) is FUBAR so one of the other guy's gives me his bike and he waits with my bike to be collected.

It was approx another 9k back to the hotel and once the adrenalin started to wear off my arm was really beginning to ache. so after a bit of "no I'll be alright, it's just a sprain" I was persuaded to go to the hospital to have a check.

anyway to cut a long story short I have a broken elbow which is going to take a fair old while to fix. fortunately the docs back here in blighty don't feel surgery is necessary (the Belgian docs wanted to put a screw in it) I'm not even in a cast, just a sling to keep it at 90 degrees but allows me to keep the wrist moving to stop the elbow stiffening up and reducing the amount of physio needed later.

So that's my target of 2000 miles this year knocked on the head, which was looking quite good up until this week.

Bad luck - hope you recover quickly.

Reminds me of a mate of mine. When he was about 10 he'd borrowed a parent's bike and was out doing massive skids down a hill. At some point he'd forgotten that the bike had been modified so the brake levers had been switched to cope with a disability. As he hit maximum speed ready to do the most impressive skid ever he inadvertently jammed on the front brake, washed out, went over the bars and smashed his shoulder and face on the road. The scars are there to this day.

Feel your pain! Broke leg in the Alps on July the 1st! Still on crutches for a while but hoping to get a ride in in the coming couple of weeks, finally, it's been too long! frown

Ouch! Why so long on crutches, was it a bad break?

In all seriousness, resting my broken foot on the pedal while pedalling with the other leg gave it some nice and gentle physio which I am convinced helped with soft tissue damage recovery.
