New Wide SLR Lens Or Compact System Camera Kit?

Apologies if this is a stupid question. But, i have been looking at the Canon EF 10-22 lens for my 60D. However i have noticed the Nikon J1 with a 10-30MM lens has dropped to around £300 which is £200+ cheaper than the Canon lens. I know this isn't a fair comparison price wise between the products themselves. But I'm not sure if i should wait a few months until i could potentially warrant spending the extra just for the lens or opt for the J1? A lot of the photographs i would aim to take with this range of focal length would be night exposures like star trails and also landscapes. I have tried searching Flickr for similar photographs taken with the J1 but I'm not having much luck.

I have the EF-S 10-22 (use with my 7D) and the IQ is fantastic!

I'll be honest I'm not fully sure about the sensor details myself in the way of what to look for. Pulled these off the net- 60D- 22.3 x 14.9 mm (1.6x crop factor)
J1- 8.8 x 13.2 mm. Found no mention of crop factor though for the J1 so the focal length could potentially differ.

The compact sensor is a shade under 3x crop factor, so the wide end on the lens would be roughly equivalent to 30mm on a FF camera. If it's a wide angle lens you are after, the 10-22 on your 60D would be quite a bit wider.

Top googling. So as suspected, 10mm on the J1 is not going to be anything as wide as 10mm on the DSLR.

The smaller the sensor, the shorter the focal length must be to get the same angle of view.



So I think it's back to Plan A: 10-20mm lens

Thanks for all the replies. I'll be opting for the new lens as soon as I can warrant the extra. Had a funny feeling the crop factor would be different on a compact system but it's the first time I've looked in to them.

Getting back to the OP, have a look at the Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM. According to camerapricebuster.com that's currently available for £337.84, with the cheapest price for the Canon 10-22 being a frankly staggering £614.

The main issue with Sigma lenses seems to be quality control, so it's probably worth buying one new from a reputable vendor so that you can exchange it if the IQ isn't great, rather than risk buying a lemon second-hand from a private buyer.

I bought new and got lucky on the build quality, so mine is wonderful, and I really cannot begin to imagine a justification for spending almost twice as much on the Canon lens, especially as both would be equally redundant if upgrading to a full frame camera.

I have been looking at the F3.5 version of the sigma 10-20mm. Does look to take a nice a shot. The price difference is still a lot with this version. The price of the Canon lens makes me wonder if to go for a 17-40L instead.

There's a lot of difference in view between 17mm and 10mm though. And often the problem is that you can't get back far enough.

Indeed. It's all well and good people saying "zoom with your legs" and rolling their eyes at you, but if I'd gone any further back with the landscape above, I would've had about 200 other day trippers in the foreground, which wasn't the effect I was looking for!

A bit of browsing around over the weekend found me one from a highly rated Amazon seller (confirmed as UK stock) for £950. Given that Canon UK currently have an £80 cashback offer running, that made for a brand new one for £870, which seemed too good to turn down!
