Yorkshire Air Museum Elvington

Never been here before despite only living 40miles away. A rare child and wife day off allowed me to go and have a look around, £8 entry was well spent and the ride there on the the motorbike was a pleasant one too on the great roads from Howden to the museum.

I couldn't help but feel sorry for the Lightening and the GR4 parked up outside clearly showing signs of deteriorating quickly. Such a shame however I understand funds only stretch so far. I hope they keep the Nimrod and the Victor nice in future years. Seeing the Nimrod made me feel saddened that this great plane is not serving us still although I think that debate has its own thread.

I did enjoy walking around and inside the Dakota in the hanger though and the Halifax although i understand is not a origional is a spectacular thing to see.

I must admit I do like the early jets, they are so elegant and simple.

I went there myself recently, thought it was a great place what with all the old hangars and buildings.

Agree about the Lightning starting to look a little tired. Great seeing the two Buccaneers.

Got talking to the chap who owned the Victor, he was telling me the Nimrod is a 100% live aircraft, if allowed could potentially fly relatively easily. A youngster too in flight hours having only 5,000 hours 'on the clock'. He told me then tend to get retired at around 20,000 hours.

The bloke who was sat in it was a really helpful and knowledgeable guy. He was telling me they hope to have it running and doing some engine runs on the next day of thunder event next year.

The Nimrod does look in great condition and the victor is a angry looking beast. It was having some painting done to it the fuselage.

Brilliant nice to know she is going to be a live exhibit. we used to use it for a cargo contract on behalf of Lynx express parcels we did a single rotation from Blackpool to Belfast and back every weekday(late 80's)

The interior of the plane is now set up to illustrate its variety of uses. Eg flying ambulance, troop carrier , passenger and cargo arrangements.

He explained to me that previously the plane was used in a maritime role where it used to spray chemicals onto spillages and the plane had previously been subject to a emergency landing having suffered double engine failure after bird strike.

Excellent place to visit isn't it? I'd love to see the Victor fly again, they are as special as the Vulcan in my mind.

The Elvington Victor and Nimrod teams are great people. Both aircraft are probably the best examples of type in the UK and will remain that way - I'm sure of that.

Yes Air Atlantique had a great contract for the Dept of Transport whereby they maintained a fleet of Daks on standby with all the spray gear should a major oil spill occur...probably the only contract where you get paid keeping aircraft on the ground!

Thanks for posting up those pictures, I really have to get myself down to Elvington again. No real excuse as I only live 5 miles away as well. I haven't been since the nimrod arrived
