I am looking for the above car and have narrowed my search to

996 Carrera 4
Silver
Black sports seats
sports exhaust if poss
under 80k miles
must be manual
decent history with receipts to back it up.

money 10-15k depending on spec/ condition

I am not too fussed on other areas but definately want silver with black sports seats.

If anyone knows of a forum members car coming up for sale please let me know.

Thanks

Facelift model?

I wouldn't get a C4 if I were you, heavy/numb steering, smaller boot, as well as the 'Omg I filled the car from empty with £20 of fuel but it still reads empty' issues. I had a C4, so I'm speaking from experience.

Can you elaborate?

I'm not fussed about the mpg as its a weekend toy and want the added grip of the 4wd in the wet.

The comment referring to adding £20 / still reading empty was not due to mpg. It's because of the odd shape of the fuel tank on the C4 / turbos, which means that the fuel level sensor only actually works from full to about 1/3 of a tank full. After that, the computer is guessing - so if you get close to empty and don't put enough fuel in for the level sensor to detect anything, it will still read empty.

Quite why anybody puts in small amounts of fuel is something I've never understood though.

There is a common view that 4wd cars are not true sports cars, but if you don't share that view then it's not something you need to worry about.

Obviously, the 4wd system takes up room, so the luggage space is smaller. On the other hand, if that's your priority you're looking at the wrong car anyway.

I had a 4wd 964 for 9 years and never felt I should have bought a C2, and my turbo also performs perfectly well enough for me - with the addition of 4wd confidence all year round. (At least, it would if I didn't currently have ABS / PSM warning lights on, but that's a different story.....)

Ah got it. Was not aware of the fuel sensor issue.

Would probably have never known as I always full tank it anyway.

Moving up from boxster S so am aware of the probs but c4 it is. Would like a
C4S but cant justify the extra dosh.

The C4S would be 10-12% more all other things being equal. And you would get the 10-12% more back when you sold it. From my experience of buying a C4S earlier this year, there are more C4S to choose from than C4 and about 40% had the PSE, with about 25% having the sports seats and about 15% having both. Silver and manual should be easy to find. But maybe a C4S is out of your budget.

Another suggestion for you - why don't you try and track down a 911 interior with the sports seats then you could swap the bits you need and sell on a 911 interior with normal seats and recoup most of your money? Also, I saw a set of electric sports seats for a 986 Boxster in black for £450 at the PCGB event in August (for sale by a trader) - I think they are the same seats as the 996.
God luck

This could be an idea and would not be opposed to changing the seats. Does anyone know if you buy a car with the ruffled leather whether its just the front and rear seats that are ruffled or are the door cards etc any different?

The door cards/dash etc are the same.
Ruffled leather always gets a bashing on here, so if/when you come to sell it just be aware that people may not like it.

Please do try a C2 and a C4 before you decide which you prefer. It's very easy to get an ideal spec from reading information on the Internet/magazines but only you can decide if the car really is for you or not. I moved from a Boxster to a C4, and the biggest disappointment for me was the heavy steering, especially after the Boxster's being so light and communicative.

My car was fully loaded, but I would have binned every option just to have a sports exhaust (which I eventually got) so look out for that, they really make a huge difference in sound.
