Drunken Fuel Gauge ;-)

Gents,

My fuel gauge is a drunkard.. ;-) unless i am static i cant tell whether i am empty or half full as it bounces between the two... lol... seriously though is there a fix for this as i don't want to replace the original if i can help it....??

Weclome to the world of TVR S ownership! Thats what they do. Plus the front indicator lens crack and the cooling system makes spagetti junction look sensible.


On the other hand, the noise, the looks, and the friendly owners make it the best classic car to own...ever.

I reckon this is another of the cute anomalies that are the S.
My gauge wallows from the bottom needle to 3/4s full, tried to keep up with how much I have put in and how many miles travelled but brain fades with age. Will have to live with a spare can in the boot, just in case.

Not just the S as my Griff does it as well. With my old S I just treated quarter of a tank as the empty level and did not worry about it. All part of the TVR experience. Just be glad its working

I have a list as long as my arm, well actually both arms and I have just treated mine to a new mat set. There is little chance that it will result in causing something else to stop working. I must sort out the water leak before the mats get wet though.
Oh yes the MOT is almost due, well the tester will have somewhere more comfy to put his feet now, rather than bare fibreglass.

The fuel tank has no baffles, so when the petrol moves so does the float.

They all wander up and down as you go around corners but should be steady otherwise. Mine used to bounce around wildly till I had the sender out, re-bent the contacts that rest on the track and re-soldered the joints. You can just put a new one in but that costs money which I try to avoid.

I agree with everyone that has posted to say they all do that.. Mine certainly does so i only ever take note of it when I am stationary and on level ground.

Mine also reads 1/4 tank too high, so I run dry when it shows a quarter tank remaining but fortunately it does stutter a bit beforehand to remind me just in case I was having too much fun to notice.

Mine already has a new sender, new tank, all new lines, pump and fuel distributor so I'm perfectly content to just live with it

LOL!! Mine spluttered a bit today and is on 1/8th of a tank!!! Me thinks me better get me 4rse off to the petrol station quick sharp!!!!

My original s1 sender was spot on , no wallowing and acurate, then it broke and I replaced it with a landrover one, now its same as everyone else's .........a bit crap

Not only does my fuel gauge vary depending on the amount of corner speed and direction I'm going but also I have a speedo that one minute is working just fine then the next it's sitting at 0 then before I know it I'm up to 140mph, this happend on most journeys out so I rely on the satnav now.
When stationary if I put the heater fan on or use the radiator cooling fan over-ride switch then the speedo jumps up to about 40mph!!

I removed and cleaned plus replaced an earth lead so assume it's either the speedo clock or the little device on the gearbox.

There are several earths to check and clean, have you done the ones on diagonal tubes down to the front outriggers? they get a lot of road crap and need to be well protected.

ah, must be measuring wind speed not ground speed ;-)

Quite an impressive acceleration though: 0 - 40 in what, about half a second?

Yes Rob, cleaned all I could find and replaced the main battery earth too.
I'm sure it's down to age etc as last week my o/s front indicator stopped working so after checking the bulb and holder which were ok I then checked the +ve and earth leads that run to the rear of the bulb holder, turns out the earth had green corrosion / oxidisation so had to cut the wire back a couple of inches until the inner copper strands looked clean.
