I do most of my cycling around Lymm in Cheshire. The rides tend to be flat and between 20-25miles. I am close to an average of 19mph compared to 18months ago when I started cycling on 9mile runs averaging 13mph.

I felt pretty good about that biggrin

I spent the weekend at my parents house in Whitehaven Cumbria and took my bike up. I did two runs (26miles yesterday and 20 this morning in the rain) and the terrain was up and down, up and down. I averaged 15 and 16mpg. One particularly big hill was out of St. Bees towards Whitehaven. I used gears in my cassette that I've never used before!

My legs hurt like hell too!

I think that is a perfect example of rule #68 biggrin

What bike? I don't mean what model, just what type.

That's a decent average, 19mph.

Good work!

Giant Defy 1 road bike.

That's nearly 19mph but on the flat.

A properly hilly ride will always knock about 4mph off your average.

I think my hills today knocked more than 4mph off me - I think it knocked me off the bike smile And a bl00dy wind as well.....

Interestingly, I have started heading the 'wrong' way out of the valley. I have to climb up out of the valley 10 mins or so after heading off. Climbing that early seems to absolutely stuff me for the ride. But just seems so wrong to head the 'right' way and then double back and head for the steep end of the valley frown

My route to work is the same - I ride about 2km further "to" work than the return trip, because otherwise about 1km into the ride there's a big hill that completely murders my legs. I can do the hill no trouble if I'm properly warmed up first, but straight out, not a chance.

Hi,

Im sort of where you were at 18months ago.

I used to do a lot of xc riding but not ridden in about 18-24months and my fitness fell off a cliff. I bought a snotter of a road bike and rebuilt it and have been riding a few times a week for about 2-3 weeks now.

Im in knutsford, so same kind of area. My standard route is the Tatton triathlon bike loop (10k). Most i have done is 3 loops but i usually do 2 with my best so far at exactly 25kmph over 2 laps.

Hopefully as i continue my distances will increase and my average speed tumble.

All i need to do is work out a nice loop for when i go back to uni in 2 weeks time!

I have only just started road cycling on a Specialized Langster fixie (42t chainring with a 16t rear cassette) and I have an average of 13-15 mph on distances ranging from 5-12 miles on mainly flat routes with the odd climb/descent.

I've just averaged 18.6mph to and from work. 25 mile with an 8 hour break half way. Over the moon with that, can't wait to get a road bike now.

I am working up to the Palace to Palace and finally crested 14mph average over 18 miles at the weekend on my MTB after 2 months of being in the 13s (I live in east Northants)

I built my bike myself and the saddle has not been that comfy, so I tweaked it forward by 1/4" before today's ride, by 3.5 miles in I couldn't stand the cramped feeling in my legs anymore so I stopped and raised the saddle by 1/2"...

...Wow! What a difference! Immediately the bike felt amazing and I completed the 14 mile ride at 14.9mph average!

I tend to average just above 18 on a flatish route over 35 miles with a few short-medium climbs, fair few traffic lights etc. If I get get high 18.'s I'm pretty happy. Really want to break the 19 barrier. Going to have a go tomorrow, havn't been cycling in aggeess but been running instead. Hopefully it hasn't buggered up my technique.

I find riding in a group has the biggest effect for me. My usual solo average over 60 miles is 15mph, or 18mph in a group (including taking turns up front)
