Raleigh F;yer Fixie
Discussion
I am thinking of buying a cheap fixie for winter cycling. I figure that I should be able get the same amount of exercise over a shorter distance / time if I ride fixie after work / evenings and just use the road bike at weekends.
Does anyone know if this raleigh flyer is any good?
Can anyone suggest any similar priced alternatives?

buy an 80s steel road bike + convert
£100 will buy you a 531 tubed bike from someone like raleigh, puch, dawes, peugeot.
£80 will buy you a set of new road wheels
£50 will buy you everything else you need
You will end up with a great bike that is light, fast and lovely to ride

Tyres are a tenner, tube is a fiver if needed.
So Wheels tyres and tubes will add to £80.

I think this is a false economy.Everything else will include:
£25 SPDs
£10 cables
£10 pads
£25 conversion kit
£10 chain
£££ saddle
£10 bar grip
Buy a good used bike.
I bought a virtually new Langster off eBay for £200 - everything worked, already had SPDs and brand new gatorskins too.
Wow thread resurrection!!
Thinking about a Raleigh Flyer on Ebay, as they come up good value , goggling them brought up this thread
Did you buy it OP?
Tempted by a Single speed as the gravel tracks, farm entrances, diesel, crap on roads is killing my drivetrain on whatever bike I use through the winter. Only thing that puts me off is that it is quite a lumpy commute with a steepish (for first thing in the morning) hill at the beginning. Ive commuted on loads of different bikes and the route is hard on all of them (as in mechanically destructive) , even if I stick to main roads , so looking for no nonsense bike to handle it.
Is a SS noticeably eaiser and smoother that the equivalent gear through a derailleur?
cheers

Mate of mine has ridden a single to work and back for years, he converted a Raleigh himself.
A few weeks back the frame cracked so he brought one of these and he is really pleased with it.
