Is there anyone in the Aberdeen(shire) area that are good with rear brakes and handbrake auto adjusters?

Mine are binding quite badly (Toyota MR2 Roadster). My local garage recently had a go at freeing them up. They've put new pads in and the handbrake feels a lot tighter compared with before, but they're still binding with the rears getting VERY hot compared with the fronts (if anything, they're worse than before).

Not sure if its the calipers, or might be faulty handbrake autoadjusters (a common problem with MR2s, and possibly other Toyotas).

I've asked on the MR2 OC forums, but while helpful at providing instructions how to dismantle the rear brakes, I'm not that great with a spanner paperbag I'm happy to pay someone to do the work.

Last solution might be to get a quote for new rear calipers from the main dealer... frown

Thanks for reading...

You should be able to get yours reconditioned or buy recon ones on an exchange basis, this will be much cheaper than new ones. Any good garage can sort this for you.

Cheers for the reply. Been speaking to a friend of my old man and that seems to be the way forward. He's an ex-mechanic and can help me fit them if needed (although if anyone knows of a competent mechanic/garage I'd be happy to hear from them).

As for sourcing the calipers, Brakes International seems recommended on PH? He also mentioned 'Reid For Speed' (http://www.reidforspeed.com/) do a recon/exchange system - anyone used them before?

MR2 calipers are notoriously bad for seizing, if youre not capable of doing the work yourself best to replace as stripping them is fairly labour intensive and will be costly. Any motor factor ( TMS Euro Car Parts etc) will have a listing.

Mark, I'm in Aberdeen, and have decent experience with MR2's (7 in total), and my girlfriends roadster had exactly the same issue as your recently (plus ineffective handbrake - same cause). All MR2's have the same issues, as they all use basically the same design of rear caliper.!

In the end I bought a used caliper of eBay, which has the risk of doing the same thing, but turned out it was fine. You can try (as I did) to remove the caliper, and push on the handbrake lever to try and work it free, but usually the problem is internal to the caliper, and this doesn't help. I'd say try another used caliper, or ideally a refurbished / exchange unit. If its any use, I have an old one (passenger side IIRC) you can have to send in for the exchange to avoid taking the car off the road.

Other than that, you can buy the refurb kit, but if your not confident with this, I wouldn't attempt it.

Cheers,
Ross

Contact this firm "http://www.biggred.co.uk/" online and you will get them quickly and after fitting just send your own back and you will get some money back. Very reasonably priced as well.

I'd say big Red as well i have had first class service with them

You can also send them a caliper to get overhauled and the price to get them overhauled isn't much more then the bits

Unfortunately Bigg Red don't have any of the calipers in stock but can refurbish mine, but would mean taking the MR2 off the road for a few days, it's my only car (I've got a bike, but the weather's getting mankie again...)

Alternatively camskills do have the parts in, but it's a bit more (and if you add the surcharge a LOT more). Plenty of recommendations for them on tyres & brake discs/pads but anyone used them for calipers?

Right, i have MarkIII's rear brakes in the garage that are used for the club big red refurbs.

You get them refurbed and fitted to your car then send on your old ones to the next person to get refurbed.

Email me your address and i'll get them posted up to you if you like. Meant to send them back to Mark ages ago but completely forgot.

Just drop him a line and let him know you've got them.

Good stuff! Is there a thread/link? Just one thing... are the calipers you've got for the facelift (6-speed) MR2s or earlier 5-speed ones?

There seems to be different part numbers for pre/post facelift MR2s, they might be different given the earlier MR2s have 15" wheels all round IIRC while mine has 16"s at the rear, but you're more of an MR2 expert than me!

I'm 99% sure they're the same.

Search for brake refurb on ROC forum and you'll get the info you need.
