I've loved Porsche since I was kid. I had a poster of a red 3.2 on my bedroom wall and it's grown from there. I've owned a number of Porsches, including an SC Targa, a 993 C2, a 996 C4S, a 968 CS and now, having realised that the later cars are not for me, I currently own another 1982 911 SC, black coupe with a sunroof and a whale tail. It's a leggy car with 150k miles on, but a recent engine and gearbox rebuild mean it pulls well and although it's cosmetically tired it's a faithful old thing and I love it dearly. It's probably worth more in parts than as a whole car with this mileage. It's coming up for a big service and a number of maintenance items, likely to run over £2k at my indy, but that's part and parcel of owning these cars and I don't mind spending the money when you can feel the benefit when you collect it.

However, I really love the look of the earlier longhood cars. I know, I know - if I want a longhood I should buy a longhood, but they're very expensive for what appears to be stepping down the ladder performance wise. The joy of the SC is that it has a lot of the specialness, the feel and the honesty of the earlier cars, but still just about modern enough to use as my daily drive (being lucky enough not to have to use a car to commute). So, I've been considering carrying out a backdate. I've looked at the various fibreglass kits, chrome bits, etc and being a reasonable amateur mechanic I've considering attacking it myself over winter in my garage. It'd mean still farming out the bodywork and spraying though. Then I happened upon this website;

http://www.911-retro-works.co.uk/bespoke.html

On the face of it £8.5k seems a lot of money to throw at an SC that's never going to be worth much with such a high figure on the odometer, but it'd cost me roughly the same doing it myself and the pictures look like a good level of workmanship. I have no intention of ever selling and if they're willing to undertake the other minor bodywork issues too it could see me in a car that (looks like one) I really desire and that I can use regularly without worrying about damaging residuals or crying if it rains while I'm out in it.

So, am I committing a cardinal sin even considering it, or should I tell the beards (and my inner beard) that they can Foxtrot Oscar and do what I like?

The Sheriff and I don't see eye to eye. I'd rather not darken that forum's door again if I can help it. Care to elaborate? By PM if you prefer.

Ah, you have also fallen out with the know-it-all Irishman then. It's not only me.

I like the idea of the retro 911. Dunno about the fellas you've linked too, but I think the cars look great; I'd say go for it, if it rocks your boat.

(Aircooled 911 nut, no beard).

No, it's not only you and by all accounts it's not just you and me either. Without going into much detail your description hits the nail on the head and I have no desire to shower him with the sycophancy that seems to be required to remain a guest on his little piece of the Internet.

As for the car I'm pretty set on doing it now. I'll investigate the above outfit thoroughly before deciding which path to choose.
