Kop Hill Climb 22nd-23rd September
Discussion
Next weekend at Kop Hill, Princes Risborough - http://www.kophillclimb.info/#. Apparently the entry list is full (apparently 400 entries) and includes some tasty-looking metal.
I've been to this once; the variety & quality of the cars in the paddock was excellent and far exceeded my expectations,
but the hill climb action seemed very dull, and it was hard to find any decent viewing points to spectate.
I will probably drive over on Saturday just for the paddock 'experience'
despite having just spent 2 days at the Revival.

The hill climb action is dull for a very good reason.
Kop Hill is a public road that is closed for the purposes of normal road traffic.
Despite being marshalled by the fine people in orange, it is most definitely not a competition event. The road traffic act still applies to all vehicles that travel up the hill. So that means current MOT, insurance, tax, obey the speed limit, no wheel spinning… etc… etc…
The drivers have just a driving license, pay their entry fee, turn up with something interesting, and go for a drive up the hill.
To make this an official speed event, will need
A law passing in parliament
Inspection by the MSA
Massive insurance complications
A whole world of pain for the organisers
And so it goes on.
It was this event in 1928(?) that led to no speed events on the public highway, when someone crashed, and hurt someone else.
There’s more to this, but not for listing on a public forum.

Even though the hill climb is no Goodwood, the paddock made the trip over there today well worthwhile. And it was nice to be able to see and hear the cars go up the hill as well, even though they were taking it easy.
I took loads of photos, and am still going through them now. I have uploaded an initial batch, but this is only a very small selection, so I will add to the set when I get a chance to do the rest.

There was a crowd control problem at the event in March 1925 and it was the ex-Raymond Mays Bugatti driven by Frances Giveen breaking a spectator's leg that had such consequences - is there really more to this? There’s more to this, but not for listing on a public forum.
Apparently in those early days there were grassed earth banks all the way up the hill giving
a good view of the cars and motorcycles in action - it's not like that now.
I went on Saturday and the vehicles on display in the paddock were superb.
I was there yesterday, supposedly after having organised the RREC contingent in the paddock (sadly, only 4 club cars made it and 2 were mine!).
I sat in the grandstand, to got a great view and there were loads of cars wheel-spinning (with no-one seeming to care). The quickest and least dramatic ascent was the Nissan GTR. Awesome!

No - not the 1925 incident itself, just some issues about what the current event is and may be in the future.Gassing Station | Herts, Beds, Bucks & Cambs | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
