Another What Camera...

need a compact to keep on me at all times must:
-have manual controls (ala dslr)
-have RAW option
-not be too delicate (I commute by motorbike)

will be used mainly in London for:
-architecture
-panaramic
-detail shots (odd macro)
-maybe street perving I mean street people shots

pretty open on budget/ secondhand or new as will be a big bithday treat :-)

dont want a bridge as I would just use my 40D if opportunity to take bulky camera is there.

S90/S95/S100 depending on budget. I have the S90 and it is a great camera.

Another S90 user here. Good little beast.

On the other hand ... Sony RX100, very recently released, may be worth a look although I think the price is higher than the Canon S100.

DPReview seem to quite like it, with a few reservations (see the conclusion of their review) but it does offer Sony's sweep panorama which may be of specific interest as you mention panoramas.

+1 S90/S95/S100

My S100 goes everywhere with me. I only use my DSLR with my 10-22, 70-300L or primes these days - to my eye the S100 gives equivalent IQ to my 7D/15-85 in a package a fraction of the size..

G12 if you want something a bit tougher with a metal body, but if you just need to protect it whilst being carried I'd just go for a s90/95/100 and a robust case.

Might be worth waiting a week at it's Photokina now, so a few new things are coming out just to see what's available and watch the other suggested cameras drop in price.

Thanks will keep an eye out, S95 looks good value at just under £200. RX100 looks v good but ~£450 I'd flinch as i lobbed it in the tank bag.

Whats the shutter lag like on these? I'm need recommendations for my parents where their prime concern is the delay between pressing a button and getting a picture.

Its pretty reasonable for a P&S using CDAF, but not best in class afik.

Another S95 user here. Brilliant little bit of kit. I keep mine in a zip up hard case when it's in my handbag.

What about an Olympus EPM1. Can be bought for just over £200 at present.
Brilliant little camera, great sensor and very easy to use.
It is almost like a mini SLR.

Update: just ordered the Canon S100, as alleged update has a wifi feature that I'd never use, but want to try with HD vid and GPS features of 100 over 95.

I've been looking at getting my Dad a decent camera because he keeps buying an 'ok' one every other year when they're on offer. I've been looking at the S95, S100 or maybe even the Nikon J1 now they've come down in price. But I'm not sure if it would be worth it if the camera was only used on auto settings. I'd try and help him with setting up myself but i fear that the Olympic discuss record would be beaten.

Alleged update (S110) has been announced and apparently the GPS functionality is now based on the use of a linked phone so it maybe that your choice is more appropriate for you anyway.


Whether the other features are of interest is another matter.

Re S95 - Auto will be absolutely fine most of the time for most people.
