What Road Bike. ~£1000ish

Hi,

Sorry if this has been done to death. But in the process of buying a road bike. I've cycled for years but always on a an MTB. The time has come for a road bike i feel.

A little torn as to what to buy. The contenders are:

Cube Agree GTC.
Planet X.
Canyon UAL
Ribble - Various.
Also a Cannondale fan but unsure of which one.

Can anyone offer me some advice. Mostly on the Canyon really as it's looking like the favorite but i'l a little unsure if i can get one in my size.

Or is anyone aware of any amazing deals out there at th emoment that would be a better option than any of the above?

Have you been to Planet X and had a look at what they've got on offer? Nice showroom and IMHO nice bikes (I've got a pair).

I do plan to pop in one weekend as it's only up the road from me.

A friend in the know has also recommended them which is why i'm keen to consider them but i've read 1 or 2 bad reviews.

Are you riding with a club? Usually plenty of variety within a club to get some opinions.

If you're Chesterfield area then we've got a good selection of carbon and plenty of honest opinions.

Yes, live in Chesterfield. Been to have a look in James and Pelican. Not got into Igloo yet as they're always clsoed when i have time to go.

Not riding in a club, have a good group of about 5 or 6 mates that all go out fairly regular. Had a go on a couple of thier bike but they're all in the cheaper range and were basically bought as they were in the right place at the right time. A couple of them are in a simular position to me as they're upgrading.

I have just bought the Agree GTC, I love it! Mine is the current 2012 model so has the 105 group set, I think the 2013 model is a slightly lower spec. I am not a hardcore cyclist, although getting the Cube has definitely sparked my interest in getting out on the road regularly. I bought a 58 as I am around 5"10.

Canyon without a doubt. That frame has been used by pro riders in the past. Best bikes around IMO in terms of value for money.

Is this a good deal? The dealer was 'selling' me that it is better to buy a composite frame with standard bits rather than an aly frame with good bits as I can easily upgrade the various parts etc.

I do really like the Cube. I'm ashamed to say that it's mostly because of the way it looks. But i've also read good things about it. not sure i'll be able to get hold of a 2012 one in my size now, everywhere seems to be sold out. Not sure i want a Tiagra set bike for the same money.

Has anyone recetly bought a bike from Canyon? Almost everything is out of stock. is this due to the 2013 bikes due out? I dont fancy having to wait for 8 weeks for a bike to turn up if i decide to take that route.

What frame size are you after? You can pick up a 2012 Cannondale Supersix (105 group) for sub £1400

A few guys on here, including me, have them and they are superb.

Think i may be buying that one. The Apex set one is £1249.

I'm 5'10 and like a smaller MTB frame. Would i be better with a 54 or a 56???

At 5'10, providing you are more or less in proportion I would suggest a 56 would be the better option. The Supersix's are quite an aggressive geometry though, so I would suggest trying to sit on/test ride a few different bikes if you can.

Think i'm going ot go for the 54 on the advice of my very informed friend, I'm pretty well perportioned but i'd rather be a little small than a little large.

If your original budget was £1k don't forget the CAAD10 with 105, 2012 model is available for £~1100. Stunning bike and can be made disturbingly light with surprisingly simple upgrades (wheels mostly).

I have a Giant Defy 1 which was £999.

I think it is great but admittedly haven;t done many miles on many other road bikes.

Ahhhh I tihnk i've seen your old TM Evo knocking about. You may have seen me in my Elise, i use it pretty much everyday.

My bike is is the black and white colour scheme. I wasn't copying honest!!
