Evening all,

I've just uploaded a few rides, including a bit of messing around on my mountain bike on Saturday. I thought I'd probably bettered my times on a few segments, so was disappointed that on the recent activity dashboard it didn't even show so much as a third fastest - much less a PR. Equally, when I go in to the ride itself, it doesn't have any little cups against any of the segments.

From there, I clicked on some of "my results" in some of the segments to see how much slower I'd been, only to find that I'd actually ridden my fastest time on Saturday for pretty much every segment I covered. confused

Has anyone else had this happen? Any ideas what might've caused it? It has worked normally on one of today's rides loaded at the same time, so I don't think it's a new thing on Strava.

I find it a bit hit amd miss with those, seems to miss some segments that look to match as well.

I had a segment pop up on a ride I went on last week. Got 6th which I was happy about as I didn't know it was there and was just pootling along.

Funny thing is I've been that way every week for the last 2 months and its a canal tow path so I can't possibly have missed it. I even picked up the segment that ends where this one starts. Still trying to figure it out!

Strava is sometimes ridiculous. Went out with a mate at the weekend and we both recorded the same ride, on the same model of phone, with the same settings on, same software updates etc.

He did 7.7 miles, 850ft climb. I did 7.8 miles, 420 ft climb.

In my somewhat limited experience with it I have found it hit and miss from time-to-time. At the weekend for example, I went as quick as I dared on a fairly steep and short downhill segment (0.2 mile), up to 24mph (which is fast for my rather unskilled hands) at one point, but when I looked after it reckoned I'd taken several minutes and clocked an average of 3mph!

I suspect most issues are with the accuracy of the GPS on the recording device.

I have noticed that segments created with iPhones rather than GPS devices tend to be less accurate, there are a couple in my area where the segment 'wanders' off the road.

I use an Edge 500 which tends to be quite accurate, but does suffer from loss of tracking under heavy tree cover - which is a total pain in the a@@ if you put in a decent effort up a tree covered hill and get not recognition for your efforts!! banghead

Do the elevations that Strava uses come from the maps on the device, or does Strava just take data from the GPS location points and lay them over a map?

I must go back and do that again! Still don't know how I can enter the segment at 29 mph, exit it at 22 mph and average 20 mph through it!!!

Well done on the Red Kite ride by the way - didn't know about it otherwise I would have signed up.

I doubt its from the device. I've got a Garmin Edge 200 and I don't think it does that sort of thing. Height gained is different when uploading the same route to the Garmin site when compared to the Strava site (Strava seems more accurate!)

From experience - massively more accurate with my new Garmin than it was with my iPhone. It's Only as good as the data it's given.

The Edge 500 and 800 have barometric altimeters, you can see a little hole underneath the units. The 200 takes altimeter readings from GPS so it's not as accurate, however the little hole on the underside of the 500 and 800 can get water inside during heavy rain and stop working altogether

Are people using the strava app on their phones? Could it be the way the app processes the data that causes issues? Cyclemeter never causes any issues for me on the iPhone. Obviously if it is fed dodgy gps data then any app will produce crap results.

Interesting... I might have to have a look in the book and see if I can calibrate it. Since I can get to sea level quite easily, this shouldn't be impossible...

I'd imagine all phone apps are going to be crap due to the phone gps, but as I'm unwilling to spend the £ on a dedicated gps ala garmin, I'll just continue as-is and swear occasionally...
Garmin edge 209 @ c£106, plus 30 quid cash back. Still a chunk but enough for me to justify and im very pleased with it!

You don't need to get to sea level to calibrate. You just need to get to a place with a known altitude.
