Audi A8 D2 - is my interior fan broken?
Discussion
Copied from the thread I made on the A8 parts forum...
Afternoon,
I've finally got round to bringing my A8 home today. As I was driving along, I've noticed that I don't seem to be able to get the interior fans blowing air.
I've included a picture below of the fan setting I had as I parked up:

Now, unless I'm missing a master control button somewhere (I don't have an owner's manual), there just doesn't seem to be any air coming out of the vents. When I'm driving along, there is the faintest wisp of cold air coming through the vents, as though cold air is being forced through the system but it's not actually doing anything.
It doesn't make any sound, even on the max setting here. I was speaking to a mechanic friend at lunchtime and he thinks it could be the fan itself that has packed in, and that removing it and testing it's circuit would be a good idea.
Or perhaps I am just missing a trick, and I don't really need a whole new fan motor? If I do need to get at the fan to test it, how would I go about doing that?

Thanks. I've also asked over on the A8 parts forum. It seems I'll need to run an multimeter on some parts to see if there is still a circuit going there. It looks as though it could be the relay for the solar roof panel causing the issue, that seems relatively common.
Either that, or it'll need a new blower motor. Both jobs look doable myself, either changing the relay for the solar roof in the driver footwell or opening the blower compartment behind the glovebox and replacing the motor in there. Now, to go and get a multimeter...

I had my multimeter in hand and was ready to really dig in to the complexity of this issue on my 98 A8 D2. Then I read a post about many of the A8D2s coming out with the main blower fan wired backwards. I got into the blower compartment and upon inspection of the wiring going into the blower it seemed pretty strange the the brown wire from the loom was connected to the red wire on the blower. I disconnected the connector and with a few jumper wires reversed the wiring and the fan volume doubled at least. After testing I permanently flipped the wires and sealed everything up. And it works like a charm. Three Audi mechanics had looked at this and I think that everyone, including me, was looking for a complex solution to what was a simple fix. Good luck!
