Coast to coast - Did it this weekend.

By 'eck it was tough. 180miles and 17,000ft climbing

We (group of 6) did it over 4 days staying in B&B's with a company taking our luggage between them.

I knew there would be climbs, and coming from Lincoln I don't really have much climbing experience. But the shear number and length was the shock.

All in all though I'm pretty pleased with myself though and very glad I did it. We're already talking about next year's.

Fair play thats some hills, thought it would be further than 180 miles though. I would love to do something like this.

I think some of the coast to coast routes are as few as 120 miles.

Its something on my tick list anyway.

Would you mind pm'ing me the details of the firm you used/b&bs etc.? I'm really tempted to try it unsupported and bivouacing overnights, so any thoughts you may have on the practicalities would be good...

Less than that. My BiL did a few weeks back for charity. He averaged 18.1mph including a crash and it was only 96miles by their route. They did it in a just over half a day. Amazing how narrow England is. I was surprised when he told me.

I would highly recommend the Way of the Roses coast to coast. Almost entirely on very quite B roads through some amazing countryside.

We used http://www.c2cpackhorse.co.uk/accom2.htm who arrange accommodation and luggage transfer. Really helpful and knowledgeable. Tell them the type of route you want to ride and they will recommend the route.

The B&B's used were great, really warm friendly places.

If you are thinking of doing it next spring I'd look at getting booked pretty soon though, as we had this booked since January are we had to split up for a couple of the B&B's as they were fully booked up.

The route from St Bees to Robin Hoods bay isn't the shortest by far, as already said at some points it's less than 100 miles. The route we took was mainly small B and unclassified roads with the occasional unavoidable bit of main road.

Because we were all on MTB's we took the options at a couple of points at took to old coach roads and forest tracks, but that was probably less than 20 miles of the whole trip.
